{"id":39104,"date":"2026-05-17T13:52:55","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T13:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/39104\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T13:52:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T13:52:55","slug":"gandalf-the-goose-stolen-from-pond-in-basted-near-borough-green-leaving-behind-companion-ryan-gosling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/39104\/","title":{"rendered":"Gandalf the goose stolen from pond in Basted, near Borough Green, leaving behind companion Ryan Gosling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Villagers have been left heartbroken by the theft of a popular goose from a pond.<\/p>\n<p>Gandalf lived with his companion Ryan, named after Ryan Gosling, in Basted Millpond near Borough Green for two years.<\/p>\n<p>But last Tuesday, a passer-by claimed he had seen someone bundle the bird into the boot of a car at about 7pm.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Benjamin Mcconnachie, of The Plough at Basted, is offering a \u00a3400 reward for information leading to the conviction of the \u201clow-life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The publican, who has run the pub for 13 years, said his whole community had been devastated by the theft.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cEveryone loves those geese.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople come from Borough Green, Platt, Crouch and other villages to visit them, and bring their children.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 766 830\" alt=\"Ryan and Gandalf\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"BSBDXX1C6YM5WOY547VV.jpg\" data-ar=\"0.92\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/BSBDXX1C6YM5WOY547VV.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan and Gandalf\"\/>Ryan and Gandalf<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing like this has ever happened before. It\u2019s always been such a nice community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has left everybody very sad and upset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever did this is the scum of the earth, and we need to catch them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A driver, who had stopped in a lay-by in Basted Lane, witnessed the incident and told villager Nigel Sheepwash that he had seen a black estate car pull up by the pond and take Embden goose Gandalf.<\/p>\n<p>He then reportedly drove off in the direction of Plough Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sheepwash had left to collect his wife from the train station at 6.50pm and spotted both geese in their regular place, but when he returned at about 7.20pm, one had gone, and he raised the alarm.<\/p>\n<p>He began searching, then contacted the neighbours who looked after the geese, to see if they had removed one. They then called the police.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe van driver came down and told me what he had seen. Stupidly, I didn\u2019t take his contact details. He didn\u2019t even say if that was a man or a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mcconnachie said that a car had raced past The Plough at speed that evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was doing 70 or 80mph, which is what brought my attention to it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He checked his pub\u2019s CCTV and found an image of a dark-coloured estate car as it sped past at 7.01pm.<\/p>\n<p>The incident has unleashed a torrent of both sadness and anger on social media, where villagers have turned into sleuths to track down the villains.<\/p>\n<p>Many have reposted the CCTV image of the car on the Facebook pages of neighbouring villages in the hope that someone will be able to identify the thieves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 509 460\" alt=\"A car passing the Plough pub around the time of the incident\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"K1CIF78AORSDO6KUU8ZF.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.11\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/K1CIF78AORSDO6KUU8ZF.jpg\" alt=\"A car passing the Plough pub around the time of the incident\"\/>A car passing the Plough pub around the time of the incident<\/p>\n<p>One of them, Julie Dervish, said: \u201cWe\u2019re all very upset. I\u2019m in my 50s now and live in Platt, but when my children were young, we used to visit Basted Mill all the time to see the wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s is a bit off the beaten track. It\u2019s not the sort of place that you would casually pass, so the thieves must have visited and seen the geese before and planned the theft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gandalf appeared mysteriously on the pond two years ago and is thought to have been released by someone who could no longer look after him.<\/p>\n<p>He lived initially with a family of wild greylag geese on the pond, but when they flew off, he was left all alone.<\/p>\n<p>Embden geese are too heavy to fly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 720 960\" alt=\"Ryan on his ownsome\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"R9TJ9J2M46OT8G8WUY6S.jpg\" data-ar=\"0.75\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/R9TJ9J2M46OT8G8WUY6S.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan on his ownsome\"\/>Ryan on his ownsome<\/p>\n<p>Geese are sociable animals and need company. A couple who live near the pond noticed Gandalf was going into a decline &#8211; saying he was \u201cmoping about and looking miserable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So they travelled to Norwich and purchased Ryan, bringing him back as a companion.<\/p>\n<p>The male geese, called ganders, lived happily together.<\/p>\n<p>One of the couple, who asked not to be named, said: \u201cThey were very tranquil and not particularly noisy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes on warm days they would sit on the tarmac of the road, and motorists would have to edge round them, but there\u2019s not really any through traffic here, and we all learnt to take care and do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The couple, who also fed them geese grain every evening, put up warning signs, as did the parish council, urging drivers to slow down.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1584 1200\" alt=\"The Plough at Basted\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"M5D01R05TTJ93HGU5N4R.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.32\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/M5D01R05TTJ93HGU5N4R.jpg\" alt=\"The Plough at Basted\"\/>The Plough at Basted<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cIf a driver had hit a goose and killed it, stopped, and done the right thing, we would have been sad, but not angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut any deliberate act of violence against wildlife, as this seems to have been, is just deplorable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t comprehend the mentality of the lowlife that would do such a thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The couple were fearful that, left alone, Ryan would plunge into a depressive decline as Gandalf had done previously.<\/p>\n<p>So on Thursday, they travelled to Bournemouth and purchased another goose, which has now been released at Basted Mill as a companion.<\/p>\n<p>His name is Gengoose Khan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 3024 4032\" alt=\"Ryan (right) now has a new companion, Khan\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"CXBIDSOHWD2B9VG15PGA.jpg\" data-ar=\"0.75\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/CXBIDSOHWD2B9VG15PGA.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan (right) now has a new companion, Khan\"\/>Ryan (right) now has a new companion, Khan<\/p>\n<p>Kent Police said: \u201cIt is alleged the bird was placed in the boot of a dark coloured estate car, which subsequently left the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInquiries are underway to establish the circumstances in line with offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone with information is urged to call the West Kent appeals line on 01622 604100, quoting reference 13-1600.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Basted Mill was a paper mill, dating from 1750.
