LONDON, May 18 (Reuters) – British employers are prioritising cost management over growth with their confidence \u200cclose to a record low and their staff \u200care likely to see inflation eat into their pay in the \u200byear ahead, according to a survey published on Monday.<\/p>\n
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a professional body for the human resources sector, said rising costs \u200cand uncertainty were \u2060continuing to weigh on hiring and investment decisions.<\/p>\n
The survey, which was conducted after the \u2060start of the Iran war but before Britain’s latest bout of political instability, showed:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Cost management was the \u200btop priority \u200bfor UK employers ahead \u200bof improving productivity and \u200cgrowing market share<\/p>\n
\u2022 Iran war does not yet seem to have materially affected hiring intentions in the UK<\/p>\n
\u2022 Indicators of employer confidence held close to record lows<\/p>\n
\u2022 Planned pay awards were mostly around 3% \u200cfor the next 12 months – unchanged \u200bfrom levels over the past \u200btwo years but \u200bbelow most forecasts for a rise \u200cin inflation<\/p>\n
\u2022 The CIPD survey \u200bof 2,049 employers \u200bwas conducted between March 23 and April 23, before heavy losses in local and regional elections \u200bfor Prime \u200cMinister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party this month increased \u200bpressure on him to resign.<\/p>\n
