{"id":4423,"date":"2026-04-02T13:46:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T13:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/4423\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T13:46:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T13:46:06","slug":"uk-led-coalition-of-40-countries-vows-action-on-hormuz-strait-gridlock-us-israel-war-on-iran-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/4423\/","title":{"rendered":"UK-led coalition of 40 countries vows action on Hormuz Strait gridlock | US-Israel war on Iran News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Kingdom is gathering foreign ministers from 40 countries to discuss options to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route that has been choked off by the United States and Israel\u2019s war against Iran.<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the virtual summit on Thursday, chaired by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, \u201cwill assess all viable diplomatic and political measures\u201d to restore the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s retaliatory attacks on commercial ships, and the threat of more, have halted nearly all traffic in the strait that connects the Gulf to the rest of the globe\u2019s oceans, shutting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/31\/after-strait-of-hormuz-opens-turmoil-would-still-last-months-analysts-say\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">critical path for the world\u2019s flow of oil<\/a> and sending petroleum prices soaring.<\/p>\n<p>The US is not among the countries attending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/1\/uk-to-host-meeting-of-35-countries-on-reopening-strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meeting<\/a>, which comes after US President Donald Trump stated that securing the waterway is not his country\u2019s job.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/2\/trumps-primetime-speech-on-iran-war-key-takeaways\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disparaged the US\u2019s European allies<\/a> for failing to support the war and renewed his threats to pull the US out of NATO.<\/p>\n<p>The countries participating in Thursday\u2019s summit, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates, have signed a statement demanding that Iran stop its attempts to block the strait and pledging to \u201ccontribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage\u201d through the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting is considered a first step, to be followed by \u201cworking-level meetings\u201d of officials to hammer out details.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the plus side, this is a broad coalition. It\u2019s not just Western, it\u2019s not just NATO. It involves countries [like] the UK, France, the Scandinavian countries, Baltic countries, but it also involves Bahrain, it involves the UAE, it involves Panama, it involves Nigeria,\u201d said Al Jazeera\u2019s Rory Challands, reporting from London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the heart of it, though, there is a capabilities question. What can they do? How much naval capacity can any of these countries offer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not by force<\/p>\n<p>No country appears willing to try and open the strait by force while fighting rages and Iran can target vessels with anti-ship missiles, drones, attack craft and mines.<\/p>\n<p>According to Challands, the British prime minister has been \u201cvery explicit\u201d about non-military solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeir Starmer has no interest in getting involved in this war.
