While recent years have brought increasingly warm springs, reaching this daily 30\u00b0C threshold before June is still uncommon, according to Met Office analysis of long-term records.<\/p>\n

Most years do not see 30\u00b0C reached until June or later. For example, the first 30\u00b0C of the year occurred in June in both 2024 (25 June) and 2025 (19 June), while in other years the threshold has not been reached until July or even August. <\/p>\n

How rare is 30\u00b0C in May?<\/p>\n

The last time a May day hit 30\u00b0C was in 2012, on 25 May. There were similarly high temperatures reported in 2010 (23 May) and 2005 (27 May), demonstrating that while uncommon, summer-like heat in May is not unprecedented.<\/p>\n

Looking back into history, temperatures reached 30\u00b0C or above in May in just a handful of years.<\/p>\n

Among the earliest instances recorded are 29 May 1944, 12 May 1945, 29 May 1947, and 25 May 1953. <\/p>\n

Overall, the pattern is clear: May 30\u00b0C events are sporadic rather than regular, typically separated by many years, the Met Office said. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s behind this weekend\u2019s heat? <\/p>\n

Persistent high pressure, prolonged sunshine, light winds, and warm air dragged northwards from continental Europe all have to align at once to create the conditions is needed to unleash this kind of heat.<\/p>\n

By late May, longer daylight hours mean the UK is already approaching its solar peak \u2014 under clear skies, temperatures can rocket, especially when the ground is parched.<\/p>\n
