{"id":45950,"date":"2026-05-22T18:47:46","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/45950\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T18:47:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:47:46","slug":"studio-hallett-ike-extends-victorian-lodge-in-london-cemetery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/45950\/","title":{"rendered":"Studio Hallett Ike extends Victorian lodge in London cemetery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studio-hallett-ike\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Hallett Ike<\/a> has completed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/renovations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renovation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/extensions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extension<\/a> of a gothic-style lodge in the grounds of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a> cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Named Cemetery House, the Grade II-listed Victorian lodge was originally designed by Thomas Little in 1855 as a vicarage house accompanying two chapels in Paddington Cemetery in Kilburn, north west London.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2329586 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/studio-hallett-cemetery-house-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x598.jpg\" alt=\"Cemetery House exterior in London\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1658\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Studio Hallett Ike has updated a gothic-style lodge in the grounds of a London cemetery<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the refurbishment of the existing lodge&#8217;s interior, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiohallettike.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Hallett Ike<\/a> extended its ground and first floors with spaces designed to have what it called a &#8220;rustic sensibility,&#8221; with nods to its original gothic character.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design seeks to reconcile the disciplined formality of the original architecture with a warm, rustic sensibility influenced by Mediterranean and mid-century Californian references,&#8221; said the studio. &#8220;The result is a calm and grounded architecture that balances openness with intimacy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2329577 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/studio-hallett-cemetery-house-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x1104.jpg\" alt=\"Interior view of updated historic home by Studio Hallett\" width=\"1825\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The existing lodge&#8217;s interior was refurbished<\/p>\n<p>On the ground floor, a new central axis connects the entrance of Cemetery House directly with the garden through full-height glass doors in the extension, helping to open up the lodge&#8217;s formerly compartmentalised plan.<\/p>\n<p>The home&#8217;s living spaces sit connected but divided by changes in level, with a raised dining area and sunken conversation pit located alongside a kitchen housed within the new extension.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2329583 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/studio-hallett-cemetery-house-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x1104.jpg\" alt=\"Kitchen interior at renovated home by Studio Hallett\" width=\"1825\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A kitchen housed within the new extension<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The stepped arrangement defines hierarchy and purpose, creating distinction without separation,&#8221; explained the studio.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What was once a cellular and disconnected arrangement is now a sequence of hierarchical spaces unified by material and proportion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2329582 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/studio-hallett-cemetery-house-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x1104.jpg\" alt=\"Living space interior by Studio Hallett\" width=\"1825\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The open-plan living spaces are divided by changes in level<\/p>\n<p>This kitchen features full-height sliding glass doors that open out onto a refurbished garden, where a stepped concrete patio and outdoor fireplace are wrapped by a white stucco wall.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, a stone island at the kitchen&#8217;s centre is surrounded by areas of full-height storage that were built from dark and knotty Pippy oak.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, the home&#8217;s first floor has been extended with a new dressing room and ensuite bathroom, centred around a large micro-cement bath and travertine sinks.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/21\/studio-hallett-ike-br-house-london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/studio-hallett-ike-br-house-london_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"BR House exterior\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Studio Hallett Ike transforms London home with series of &#8220;subtle adjustments&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This bathroom connects to the bedroom through a large, pointed arch opening, designed to mimic the lodge&#8217;s original gothic-style window surrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Externally, the extensions were finished in pale Petersen Kolumba brick, with the ground floor extension topped by an in-situ case concrete spandrel beam.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Deep reveals and precise brick articulation introduce depth and solidity, while large glazed pivot doors establish a direct visual link to a re-imagined courtyard garden,&#8221; Studio Hallett Ike said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cemetery House embodies this approach \u2013 quietly confident, minimal, and timeless,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2329570 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/studio-hallett-cemetery-house-extension-london_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1104.jpg\" alt=\"Bathroom space at the Cemetery House by Studio Hallett\" width=\"1825\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Travertine sinks and a micro-cement bath feature in the new bathroom<\/p>\n<p>Studio Hallett Ike was founded in 2018 by Jonty Hallett and Madeleine Ike.<\/p>\n<p>Previous projects by the practice include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/01\/21\/studio-hallett-ike-br-house-london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refurbishment of a Victorian townhouse in east London<\/a> via a series of &#8220;subtle adjustments&#8221;
