That\u2019s why we\u2019re building a bank that is designed for the future. AI plays a key role in how we get there,\u201d Elhedery said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>HSBC\u2019s new appointment comes during the bank\u2019s widespread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanker.com\/content\/52e9e047-f721-433c-9a03-33734a09faae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restructuring<\/a>, as the lender pushes forward with its plan to cut staff and close business units, reinvesting money into high-growth areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1a3fa492-83b3-4c97-bf3c-78e1674fd70c.png\" alt=\"A portrait image of David Rice\" data-type=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                    David Rice, HSBC\u2019s new head of AI\u00a9 HSBC<\/p>\n<p>The bank expects to deliver $1.5bn in subsequent cost savings six months ahead of schedule, with the savings expected to be realised in the first half of this year.<\/p>\n<p>HSBC said last year it would reduce global staff costs by 8 per cent, with senior managers and those in the newly merged wholesale corporate and institutional arm particularly vulnerable to redundancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plans to expand in Asia also left the bank\u2019s UK head office potentially at higher risk of staff cuts.
