DUBAI\/OSLO, May 26 (Reuters) – United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said on Tuesday that a tanker had \u200creported an external explosion on the vessel’s port \u200cside, close to the waterline, 60 nautical miles off Oman’s capital \u200bMuscat.<\/p>\n
UKMTO said the vessel, identified as the Olympic Life, and its crew were safe, although the tanker reported some bunker fuel had been discharged into the sea. It said \u200cthe cause of \u2060the incident was unknown.<\/p>\n
According to MarineTraffic vessel-tracking data, the Greek-owned Very Large Crude Carrier was \u2060sailing past Muscat at around 0700 GMT, heading out of the Gulf of Oman, and was not carrying cargo.<\/p>\n
The \u200bship’s \u200btechnical manager, Springfield Shipping, said \u200bthe vessel was struck \u200cby an unidentified object at about 0920 GMT, but remained stable and operational.<\/p>\n
“An initial assessment indicated that there was damage to one of the vessel’s bunker tanks. A sheen was reported in the water after the incident,” \u200cit said in a statement \u200bto Reuters, adding that the spill \u200bhad since been \u200bcontained.<\/p>\n
The vessel is owned by Athens-based Olympic \u200cShipping & Management, the successor to \u200bOlympic Management founded \u200bby late shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, according to the Onassis Foundation’s website.<\/p>\n
The company was not immediately \u200bavailable for comment.<\/p>\n
