{"id":49439,"date":"2026-05-26T22:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T22:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/49439\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T22:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T22:32:09","slug":"uk-poland-set-to-sign-defence-treaty-to-tackle-hostile-threats-across-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/49439\/","title":{"rendered":"UK, Poland set to sign defence treaty to tackle hostile threats across Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">LONDON, May 26 (Reuters) &#8211; Britain will sign a new defence and security treaty with Poland on Wednesday to strengthen defence cooperation in the face of \u200cincreasing hostile threats across Europe, the government said, following similar deals \u200cwith France and Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The deal, due to be signed when Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk meets \u200bhis British counterpart Keir Starmer in London, will improve border security, tackle organised crime and deepen defence cooperation with the European Union, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They will discuss what Britain called a major uptick in hybrid attacks, including Russian-ordered arson attacks in East London and across \u200cEurope, as well as cyberattacks \u2060and espionage, the government said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While Britain and Poland are already close allies, Starmer said &#8220;the challenges Europe now faces demands an even \u2060stronger partnership&#8221;. The continent has been under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration to take greater responsibility for its own defence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;This treaty is the biggest step forward in \u200bour \u200bdefence and security relationship with Poland in \u200ba generation, allowing us to confront \u200cmodern security threats that may be less visible but no less dangerous,&#8221; Starmer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8216;HISTORIC&#8217; TREATY<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a Polish government meeting on Tuesday, Tusk said that the signing of the treaty would be a &#8220;historic moment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Poland signed a defence treaty with France in 2025, boosting defence cooperation, and is working on a similar treaty with Germany, \u200cas alliances with European partners take on \u200bgreater significance for Warsaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Tusk said beyond defence a \u200bsignificant part of the treaty \u200bfocused on cybersecurity.
