Two people have been arrested after the death of a baby in Gateshead. Police officers were called to a property in Deckham on Thursday after the ambulance service raised a report of concern for the welfare of the infant.<\/p>\n
The baby was taken to hospital but died a short time later. Two people have been arrested and released on bail.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 1.45pm yesterday (Thursday), we received a report via the ambulance service of concern for the welfare of a baby in the Gateshead area. The baby was taken to hospital but tragically died a short time later.<\/p>\n
“Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this time. We immediately launched an investigation, and two people have been arrested in connection with the report.<\/p>\n
“A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, and a woman has been arrested on suspicion of neglect. Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.<\/p>\n
“The investigation is very much at an early stage, and we would ask people to avoid speculation as officers take the necessary time to establish the circumstances.”<\/p>\n
