The land of Derby County\u2019s old training ground<\/a> could be brought back into use for the first time in 23 years \u2013 to help a \u201ccritical\u201d Rolls-Royce expansion.<\/p>\n

New cricket pitches could be installed at the site of the former \u201cRamarena\u201d training ground<\/a> at Raynesway.<\/p>\n

The plan sent to Derby City Council chiefs<\/a> wants to breathe new life into the site where, for decades, Rams players used to train for games at the Baseball Ground.<\/p>\n

The club left the training facility in the early 2000s and moved to Moor Farm in Oakwood.<\/p>\n

Since then, it is reported, the land has stood derelict and been the subject of anti-social behaviour and fires.<\/p>\n

Rolls-Royce wants to create two cricket pitches<\/a> on the site \u2013 opposite its Raynesway offices \u2013 to facilitate the relocation of Alvaston and Boulton Cricket Club.<\/p>\n

The club play its home games within the Rolls-Royce grounds \u2013 so the proposed move would just be to the other side of the busy road.<\/p>\n

Documents state the reason for this move is \u201cto enable redevelopment of its current site as part of the Rolls-Royce Raynesway expansion\u201d.<\/p>\n

Rolls-Royce \u2013 one of Derby\u2019s biggest employers \u2013 is currently contracted to provide all the nuclear reactor plants that will power new attack submarines as part of a tri-lateral agreement between Australia, the UK and the US (Aukus).<\/p>\n

The company is working to double the size of its submarine site<\/a> to meet increased demand from the Royal Navy.<\/p>\n

This wider scheme will deliver significant economic benefits creating more than 1,100 jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rolls-Royce chiefs say the expansion is of \u201ccritical national importance\u201d.<\/p>\n

A report detailing the application says early installation of the cricket pitches is \u2018essential\u2019 as cricket squares \u201cneed two growing seasons to become playable\u201d.<\/p>\n

The planning statement on behalf of Rolls-Royce states: \u201cThe proposed relocation of the cricket club to the former Ramarena site will enable the continuation of playing pitch provision from one site to the other.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe proposal will also facilitate the delivery of modern, higher\u2011quality cricket facilities to replace the club\u2019s existing provision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe consider that due to the length of time it has been unused \u2013 over 20 years \u2013 the former Ramarena site is considered to have a \u2018nil\u2019 planning use due to abandonment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Previous plans for the site \u2013 close to the River Derwent \u2013 to turn it into a storage facility were turned down by the council in 2014.<\/p>\n

Planning officers at the time said the application did \u201cnot adequately demonstrate that the proposed use would minimise the adverse effects associated with a high flood risk\u201d.<\/p>\n
