{"id":54477,"date":"2026-06-02T13:31:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T13:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/54477\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T13:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T13:31:09","slug":"uk-athletics-fined-over-death-of-uae-paralympian-abdullah-hayayei-olympics-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/54477\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Athletics fined over death of UAE Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei | Olympics News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Abdullah Hayayei was killed in London in 2017 when preparing for the World \u200bPara Athletics Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 2 Jun 20262 Jun 2026<\/p>\n<p>UK Athletics was fined 350,000 British pounds ($471,000) \u2060on Tuesday \u2060over the death of Abdullah Hayayei, who was killed in 2017 while the Paralympic athlete was training in London.<\/p>\n<p>Hayayei, from \u2060the United Arab Emirates, was preparing for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships at the Newham Leisure Centre when a metal \u2060throwing cage fell on him.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>The 36-year-old athlete \u2014 who had made his debut in the javelin and shot put at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil \u2014 was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>A police \u200cand health and safety investigation found that the stabilising metal lattice base plates of the discus cage were missing.<\/p>\n<p>UK Athletics pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter in February and was issued the fine and told to pay 44,000 pounds ($59,000) in court costs.<\/p>\n<p>The head of sport for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, Keith Davies, 78, also \u2060pleaded guilty to an offence under the \u2060Health and Safety at Work Act. He was sentenced to a community order with 175 hours of unpaid work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere can be no doubt that UK Athletics were \u2060grossly negligent in their safety management, which caused the death of a talented athlete,\u201d Colin Gibbs \u2060from Britain Crown Prosecution Service said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey left \u2060equipment in a seriously unsafe condition, and Mr Hayayei\u2019s death was wholly avoidable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UK Athletics said it was deeply and genuinely sorry for what had occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe failings identified in \u200cthis case should never have happened,\u201d the organisation said in a statement. \u201cWhile nothing can undo what happened, there has been a determined \u200cfocus \u200con learning from these events and ensuring stronger standards and safeguards are in place throughout athletics.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Abdullah Hayayei was killed in London in 2017 when preparing for the World \u200bPara Athletics Championships.
