Greetings from melting London. No doubt it\u2019s cold and raining by the time you read this, but \u2013 as I write \u2013 things have really hotted up in Britain, in every sense of the term.<\/p>\n
First, actual heat. 35 degrees in May? In England? Extraordinary \u2013 the warmest May bank holiday ever recorded in London and a worrying sign of things to come \u2013 in a city that feels more like steamy Bangkok than sunny Barcelona when temperature rises beyond a certain point.<\/p>\n
This being Britain, hardly anything works in such weather. Trains are cancelled. Shops are closed. Hardly anyone has aircon. Teenagers jump en masse into London ponds and lakes that are designated havens for wildlife; no wonder \u2013 we closed many of our swimming pools and open-air lidos back in the 1970s and 1980s to save money.<\/p>\n
