Talks between Britain and India on implementing a free trade deal are moving \u200cquickly and going well, trade minister Peter Kyle said, suggesting the deal would not be reopened but could come into effect later than expected after a dispute over steel. <\/p>\n
Britain and India\u00a0agreed a free trade \u200bdeal\u00a0in May 2025 and\u00a0signed it two months later, to be implemented after \u200beach country ratified the deal, which was expected to happen within about \u2060a year, News.az<\/a> reports, citing Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n But Indian officials have expressed concern about steel trade measures that Britain is due \u200bto introduce next month, and have suggested that aspects of the trade deal could be renegotiated \u200bas a result.<\/p>\n Speaking after returning from talks in Delhi on Wednesday, Kyle played down the disagreement, citing comments by his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal that discussions had gone well.<\/p>\n “We look forward to cracking on. \u200bThese things take time but we’ve been working at breakneck speed,” Kyle told reporters after \u200ba trade dinner in the City of London.<\/p>\n A British official has said talks on implementing the free \u200ctrade \u2060agreement (FTA) were separate to the steel trade measures.<\/p>\n
