{"id":56333,"date":"2026-06-04T20:35:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T20:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/56333\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T20:35:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T20:35:25","slug":"we-spent-three-hours-walking-around-hindley-and-couldnt-find-a-single-woman-voting-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/56333\/","title":{"rendered":"We spent three hours walking around Hindley and couldn\u2019t find a single woman voting Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;There&#8217;s no way I can go for someone that holds those opinions, and it saddens me that any woman would&#8217;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pauline Round, 79\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0_Pauline-Round-79.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Pauline Round, 79\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Pauline Round, 79(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Navigating the streets of Hindley, you would be hard-pressed to judge whether it is Reform or <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Labour<\/a> who hold greater sway over this corner of <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/wigan\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Wigan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Red and turquoise posters, stickers and boards crop up with near equal frequency in the gardens and windows of the Makerfield town. But there appears to be one demographic for whom the by-election vote seems clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After more than three hours in Hindley, including multiple laps of the town centre, trekking through residential streets, stopping every woman we came across, not one told us they planned to vote Reform\u2019s Robert Kenyon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"Click here for our dedicated Makerfield by-election newsletterLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=0c190a31-339c-45e5-9b4c-274e3c8d78bf&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Click here for our dedicated Makerfield by-election newsletter<\/a> with exclusive interviews and analysis<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The vast majority of them then told us they were backing Labour and <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/andy-burnham\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Andy Burnham<\/a>. A few had not yet made up their minds or did not plan to vote.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Vote Andy Burnham board in Hindley, Makerfield\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0_Hindley-2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Vote Andy Burnham board in Hindley, Makerfield\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Vote Andy Burnham board in Hindley, Makerfield(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">For many of those we spoke to, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/keir-starmer-slates-reforms-makerfield-34058336\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">comments alleged to have been made by the plumber-turned-councillor prior to his entry into politics<\/a> appeared to be a significant factor in their decision. These allegedly include responding to a sexually explicit comment about Carol Vorderman with \u2018He&#8217;s only saying what we&#8217;re all thinking\u2019 \u2013 <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/reforms-white-van-man-robert-34021628\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">something Mr Kenyon later defended as a \u2018crass joke\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He has further been accused of saying women get abortions for \u2018vanity purposes\u2019 and \u2018can\u2019t ref, drive or give directions\u2019. Reform UK has stood by Mr Kenyon, saying he \u2018isn\u2019t a polished, professional politician\u2019, \u2018doesn\u2019t speak like one\u2019 and, in the party\u2019s opinion, that is \u2018precisely why he\u2019ll be a straight-talking, effective voice for normal working people in Makerfield\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However, one female voter, who gave her name just as Leah, told us: \u201cThere&#8217;s no way I can go for someone that holds those opinions, and it saddens me that any woman would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The 41-year-old said she would be voting for Andy Burnham with the hope that he becomes the country\u2019s next Prime Minister. Leah had considered voting for the Greens, but fears this would be a \u2018wasted vote\u2019. She also believes that Wigan has become quite a \u2018racist area\u2019 and people are voting Reform for \u2018one reason only\u2019 \u2013 to stop the small boats.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Leslie Yates, 68\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0_Leslie-Yates-68.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Leslie Yates, 68\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Leslie Yates, 68(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said: \u201cI don&#8217;t know so much about Andy Burnham, other than that there&#8217;s a lot of golden oldies around here that have high opinions on him. I would say it&#8217;s hard not to take on other people&#8217;s opinions, but I think given the Reform candidate and his views on women and abortion, it makes it quite clear cut for me which one I&#8217;d go for [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve got friends, children that are studying politics at the moment, and they&#8217;ve come to the opinion, if you vote Burnham, you&#8217;re voting potentially for a new Prime Minister, and if you don&#8217;t, then nothing changes. People in Wigan voting Reform, I don&#8217;t know where they think these boats are coming from, but they&#8217;re not coming up the canal, are they?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSo it&#8217;s not going to change anything in Wigan or nationally to vote for Reform here in Wigan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Car sales manager Caroline Jones, 48, said she too will \u2018definitely be voting Andy Burnham\u2019. She too feels the Reform vote is \u2018very driven by racism\u2019, with the whole campaign \u2018seemingly built on stopping the boats\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On Robert Kenyon, she added: \u201cVery anti-women, saying that women can&#8217;t drive, as if we&#8217;re going back to the dark ages and they should stay at home and look after the kids and wash up and look after the men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Ms Jones told us, in her opinion, Mr Kenyon\u2019s comments \u2018most definitely\u2019 impact on his suitability for running for the Makerfield seat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Reform UK board in Hindley, Makerfield\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0_Hindley.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Reform UK board in Hindley, Makerfield\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Reform UK board in Hindley, Makerfield(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Retiree, Pauline Round, 79, said she too has decided to give Labour her backing, saying she normally votes for the party. Mrs Round told us she had actually met Mr Burnham \u2018a long time ago\u2019 and liked him at the time. However, her support of him now comes with a caveat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But if he wins the seat \u2018and doesn\u2019t do the right thing\u2019, her vote will be going elsewhere in future. Her husband has dementia and their recent experiences have made the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">NHS<\/a> and social care a key priority for her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said: \u201cI worked all my life, and because we&#8217;re over that [financial] threshold, you can&#8217;t get nothing. So you have to use your money up. I just don&#8217;t know. I think I&#8217;ll end up having to go back to Andy Burnham.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On Mr Kenyon\u2019s comments, the 68-year-old retired hairdresser added: \u201cI&#8217;m an independent woman. I drive a car. Not a chance I&#8217;d be voting for them at all, if that&#8217;s what they stand for. They seem very male chauvinist pigs, very male chauvinist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Tracey Birmingham, 55, said she \u2018hopes Andy Burnham does get in because he\u2019s done a lot of good things for Manchester\u2019, raising public transport as an example. She added: \u201cI would back Andy Burnham because he has done a hell of a lot and he&#8217;s a genuine and local guy. He has done a heck of a lot. He&#8217;s a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She was shocked to hear of the comments made towards Carol Vorderman, saying \u2018that\u2019s wrong because Carol Vorderman is a nice lady\u2019. Those comments \u2018go against\u2019 Mr Kenyon as a candidate, she believes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tracey Birmingham, 55\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0_Tracey-Birmingham-55.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"Tracey Birmingham, 55\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">Tracey Birmingham, 55(Image: Manchester Evening News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">For Ms Birmingham, more youth provision is a key priority for the area: \u201cA lot of these kids are good kids. They need somewhere where they can go, like a community centre, like a sports centre or wherever. There&#8217;s nothing for them and it&#8217;s a shame. The kids who I know are really good kids and they&#8217;re nice kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The stance of the women we spoke to stands in stark contrast to the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/disgusting-pub-banter--winstanley-34015282\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">more divided views of the men with whom we have previously discussed Mr Kenyon\u2019s comment<\/a>s. While some men have condemned them as \u2018disgusting\u2019, others likened them to \u2018pub banter\u2019 or questioned whether they actually had been said at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Conversations today also seem to present a divergence from previous feelings about Reform in this area. <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/wigan-local-election-results-2026-33874424\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Hindley and Hindley Green both voted in Reform councillors at this year\u2019s local elections<\/a> and, in both cases, those elected secured more than half \u2013 around 52pc \u2013 of the vote share.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A visit to the town in the immediate wake of the by-election being called <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/forgotten-corner-makerfield-been-left-33991174\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">also evidenced a strong pro-Reform sentiment<\/a>. The changing tone raises questions, then, over how much damage Mr Kenyon\u2019s comments have done to Reform\u2019s chances and how much sway the female vote will have come polling day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A Reform spokesman has previously said Mr Kenyon made his comments before entering politics. The spokesman said: \u201cWe fully back Cllr Kenyon. He is an excellent, local candidate who we are confident will be a superb MP for Makerfield.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The spokesman added: \u201cThese comments were made long before Rob was in politics. He isn\u2019t a polished, professional politician and doesn\u2019t speak like one.
