A Nottinghamshire Police <\/a>officer resigned before being sacked after killing a retired Nottingham Post<\/a> photographer with his police<\/a> van.<\/p>\n Steven Allcock, who had been a police constable<\/a> until he resigned days before a misconduct hearing was held on Friday, June 5, previously pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving after fatally striking 80-year-old Trevor Bartlett<\/a> with the force vehicle on the evening of December 19, 2023.<\/p>\n As the van came down the A52 <\/a>towards Nottingham on blue lights, Mr Bartlett was correctly crossing the street on his way home from his local pub, the Nurseryman in Beeston<\/a>, while the traffic lights were on red.<\/p>\n The former officer had been driving an \u201cangry and aggressive\u201d suspect to a police station at the time and was distracted by this, a court was told earlier this year.<\/p>\n On February 12, Allcock was sentenced to a 12-month community order, with a requirement to undertake 180 hours of unpaid work. He also received a two-year driving disqualification.<\/p>\n Allcock, who had been an officer since 2020, did not show up to the gross misconduct hearing at Nottinghamshire Police’s Sherwood Lodge headquarters on Friday, but the meeting proceeded in his absence.<\/p>\n The force placed him on the barred list and Chief Constable Steve Cooper said he would have been sacked if he had not already resigned.<\/p>\n Liz Briggs, counsel for Nottinghamshire Police, said the officer had clearly not intended to kill Mr Bartlett but should have predicted the danger his actions posed to the public.<\/p>\n “It was clearly not an act that was intentional, but the officer would have reasonably been able to see that his actions carried the risk of significant harm.”<\/p>\n The police force’s legal representative argued that his lawbreaking would “clearly impact” public confidence in policing if he had remained an officer.<\/p>\n Ms Briggs added that Allcock had not been acting in line with his training as a police officer, which was an aggravating factor, but he had been dealing with an incident at the time of the crash, which was a mitigating aspect.<\/p>\n She told Chief Constable Steve Cooper<\/a> that in the police force’s view, despite this mitigation, his culpability was high and that his actions amounted to gross misconduct.<\/p>\n Later in the hearing, the Chief Constable agreed to this, saying that Allcock had breached the required standards of behaviour and that criminal convictions were “fundamentally incompatible” with being a police officer.<\/p>\n DC Tom Hill, of the Police Federation, who represented the former officer at the hearing, argued that Allcock – who was already effectively banned from policing due to his criminal record – should not be punished again by being put on the barred list.<\/p>\n This could prevent Allcock, who he told the hearing was remorseful and had admitted guilt at the earliest possibility, from moving on with his life and finding future employment outside of policing.<\/p>\n DC Hill said Allcock wanted to pass on his “sincere condolences” to Mr Bartlett’s family and loved ones for their loss.<\/p>\n Trevor Bartlett died on December 19, 2023, after hit by a police van(Image: Nottingham Post)<\/p>\n “Clearly he will have to live with the events of that night for the rest of his life,” he said.<\/p>\n “It was a single isolated incident,” the Police Federation rep explained, before adding this was “clearly not premeditated or pre-planned”.<\/p>\n DC Hill told the chair the former officer had continued to work before his recent resignation, when he could have chosen not to.<\/p>\n “He has also received some positive comments from the deceased’s family on how he has conducted himself,” he added.<\/p>\n The Chief Constable accepted that the former officer had shown “genuine remorse” for his actions, but concluded the officer had caused high levels of physical harm – in killing Mr Bartlett – and reputational harm to Nottinghamshire Police.<\/p>\n He acknowledged that Allcock had not intended to cause this harm, but said his only option was to record that the former employee would have been sacked if he had not already resigned and place him on the barred list.<\/p>\n “Police drivers have a higher responsibility to eliminate risks to the public,” the leading officer said, explaining that he was not following his training.<\/p>\n Emily Barry, director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the police watchdog, said: \u201cOur sympathies remain with Mr Bartlett\u2019s family and everyone affected by his tragic death.<\/p>\n \u201cPolice may drive through red lights where necessary but should not endanger the safety of other road users. PC Allcock failed to consider the potential hazards, with fatal consequences, and he has now been held accountable for his actions.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr Bartlett worked for the Post as a photographer and was particularly well known among Nottingham Forest fans for his photos during the Brian Clough<\/a> era.<\/p>\n He was one of the few photographers who had a close relationship with the legendary manager.<\/p>\n His favourite photo was of a permed Peter Shilton kissing the coveted trophy after the Reds had conquered Europe.<\/p>\n![\"Trevor](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2_IMG-0128jpgPo.jpg\")
