Her devastated mother Ann Moralee battled in vain for 18 months to get help for Izzy and tried warning health officials that her daughter would die from it.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIsabelle Sapherson-Moralee, known as Izzy, died after her body shut down having spent five years taking the class B drug (Picture: BNPS)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I can\u2019t do it anymore\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Those were the words of estate agent Izzy Sapherson-Moralee to her mum when she discharged herself from hospital. <\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, an inquest heard, the 22-year-old died in agony after her body shut down from a five-year addiction to class B drug ketamine. <\/p>\n<p>At the time of her death she weighed just over five-and-a-half stone (around 79lbs or 35kg). <\/p>\n<p>Her mum, Ann Moralee, spent 18 months fighting to get help for Izzy and tried repeatedly to tell officials that her daughter would die as a result of addiction. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Start your day informed with Metro&#8217;s <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/news-updates\/?signup-source=news-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/breaking-news?ito=news-article&amp;?signup_source=news-article-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n<p>Izzy suffered from chronic pain and her bladder was so badly damaged she had to spend \u00a3500 a month on incontinence pads. <\/p>\n<p>She ended up in hospital on April 25 last year but discharged herself and \u2018went home to die\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"605\" height=\"649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SEI_300049557-23c4.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28647328\" alt=\"TAKEN W\/O PERMISSION PLEASE LEGAL\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe inquest was told Izzy stopped trusting doctors after a \u2018vile\u2019 experience with a urologist (Picture: Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>Over the following days, her condition deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p>Ann said: \u2018I kept asking her, please let me <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/smartphones\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phone<\/a> an ambulance but she said \u201cno more hospitals mum, I just want to be at home with you, I can\u2019t do it anymore\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She knew she was dying that last 48 hours. She died 36 hours after she got home.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Even when she was in hospital the month before her death, Izzy was twice caught taking ketamine on the ward by her mum.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u2018I followed her out of the building and tried to get the number plate of whoever was supplying my sick child with ketamine.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When Ann discovered Izzy\u2019s body she called 999 and while carrying out CPR she told the operator: \u2018I said she\u2019s going to die, I told everybody she was going to die and now here we are and she\u2019s dead.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Izzy died after taking a toxic combination of morphine and gabapentin, causing her breathing to slow and stop. <\/p>\n<p>An infection was found in her liver, but it was not the cause of death. <\/p>\n<p>She added: \u2018I have saved a lot of lives in my career, both as a nurse and flight attendant, but ultimately I couldn\u2019t save my daughter.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Izzy, from Wimborne, Dorset, started taking ketamine when she moved in with her boyfriend in the Covid lockdowns of 2020. <\/p>\n<p>It was only at the end of 2023 that Ann discovered she had been taking it. By then the addiction was \u2018out of control and she couldn\u2019t hide it anymore\u2019, Ann said. <\/p>\n<p>She told the inquest Izzy had a mistrust of doctors after an experience at Salisbury District Hospital. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018She was just seen as a ketamine addict and everything else was ignored, especially her back pain,\u2019 she said. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SEI_300028670-eae1.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28648756\" alt=\"BNPS.co.uk (01202 558833) Pic: BNPS Pictured: Ann Moralee leaving the inquest. Her devastated mother Ann Moralee battled in vain for 18 months to get help for Izzy and tried warning health officials that her daughter would die from it.\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIzzy\u2019s mum Ann Moralee leaving the inquest in Bournemouth (Picture: BNPS)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I spent up to \u00a3500 a month on incontinence pads, we asked for help from the bladder and bowel people but they discharged her, as did the weight-loss team who said she didn\u2019t have an eating disorder. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Then she really just gave up.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ann looked at putting Izzy into rehab and even considered going to the US for treatment. <\/p>\n<p>Her last chance, she believes, was when Izzy was arrested for suspected possession of ketamine and she should have been sectioned. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018She couldn\u2019t walk, she was disorientated \u2013 that was the last opportunity to save her,\u2019 she said. \u2018They had a duty of care, they should have applied the Mental Health Act.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She was deemed to have capacity, my argument is how could she possibly have capacity?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was desperately trying to help my daughter. She was so desperately ill. I think there were safeguarding concerns and missed opportunities to escalate and order an intervention.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In her final moments, Ann asked Izzy if she wanted to recover. Ann told the inquest: \u2018\u201dYes\u201d, she said, \u201cI\u2019m going to get better, I\u2019m going to do a psychology course then I want to help other children like me. Nobody should have to go through what I have been through\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Her goal was to get better.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Scott Davey, from drug and alcohol charity Reach, worked to support Izzy. <\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018Ketamine normally starts as recreational. The dissociative factors of it mean it can be used to mask <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/mental-health\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mental health<\/a>, external factors going on stresses with family, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/work\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">work<\/a>. It becomes habitual.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is very cheap, accessible, that plays into it massively. It\u2019s not the acute effect, it\u2019s the long-term effect where it\u2019s done physical damage and then being used to manage the pain, it\u2019s a Catch 22.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ann added: \u2018Izzy was a beautiful, funny girl, highly intelligent, a talented photographer and dancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But as beautiful and smart as she was, she was also a master manipulator.
