{"id":57279,"date":"2026-06-06T06:38:24","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T06:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/57279\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T06:38:24","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T06:38:24","slug":"two-convicted-over-london-stabbing-of-iranian-dissident-journalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/57279\/","title":{"rendered":"Two convicted over London stabbing of Iranian dissident journalist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Romanians were convicted on Friday over the stabbing of an Iranian journalist outside his home in London in a 2024 attack that prosecutors linked to Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Nandito Badea, 21, and George Stana, 25, were found guilty of wounding with intent for the stabbing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/iran-international-journalist-stabbed-wounded-outside-his-london-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pouria Zeraati<\/a>, a news presenter for Persian-language outlet Iran International.<\/p>\n<p>The attack was \u201cdesigned to silence a journalist through intimidation and violence,\u201d the British prosecution service\u2019s anti-terrorism chief Frank Ferguson said after the verdict at Woolwich Crown Court.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued during the trial that the attack was a proxy operation linked to the Iranian state and the victim was targeted because of his work as a journalist, though Iran denied any involvement.<\/p>\n<p>The pair will be sentenced on July 3, when the judge could comment on the possible role of Iran in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Zeraati needed emergency treatment after he was stabbed several times in the leg outside his home in Wimbledon, southwest London.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gfdfgd.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3257603\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gfdfgd-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tPouria Zeraati seen recovering in a hospital bed in London, March 30, 2024 (Screenshot\/X; Used in accordance with Clause 27a of the Copyright Law)<\/p>\n<p>But he returned to work at the dissident broadcaster the following month, insisting that \u201cthe show must go on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The defendants waited for Zeraati and \u201cacted together to restrain and stab him before making an immediate and organized escape from the UK,\u201d said Ferguson.<\/p>\n<p>The men were arrested in Romania in December 2024 and extradited to Britain, but a third man accused of taking part in the attack is still in Romania because he faces separate charges there, police said.<\/p>\n<p>Iran International, a Saudi-funded private broadcaster based in a heavily secured building in west London, was labelled a \u201cterrorist\u201d organization by Tehran in 2022, along with the BBC\u2019s Persian-language channel.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a Greek man was charged with spying on a journalist at Iran International.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/05\/AFP__20260127__93GE3EX__v2__HighRes__BritainIranMediaProtestsTelevision-e1780060248438.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3832941\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/AFP__20260127__93GE3EX__v2__HighRes__BritainIranMediaProtestsTelevision-e1780060248438-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tIllustrative: A presenter for dissident Persian-language TV station Iran International prepares for a news broadcast at the network\u2019s studio in London on January 20, 2026.
