They usually form a nose-to-tail formation in groups as they travel down oak trees.<\/p>\n<p>They have nests which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/warning-on-oak-processionary-moth-issued-ahead-of-peak-season\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"the Government has said\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a1fe33ce4b0ba31730488d8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/warning-on-oak-processionary-moth-issued-ahead-of-peak-season\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Government has said<\/a> are usually teardrop-shaped or dome-shaped and can range from the size of a 50p coin to that of a melon. Hairy caterpillars which are not on oak or are not associated with a silk nest are almost certainly not (oak processionary moths)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Where are oak processionary moths found in the UK? <\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re usually found in the South-West of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Nicola Spence, Defra Chief Plant Health Officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/warning-on-oak-processionary-moth-issued-ahead-of-peak-season\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"said\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a1fe33ce4b0ba31730488d8\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/warning-on-oak-processionary-moth-issued-ahead-of-peak-season\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cI would advise that members of the public living in the South East, Derbyshire and Dorset, avoid any contact with the caterpillar and its nests, as this can cause irritation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Why are oak processionary moths bad? <\/p>\n<p>Firstly, they feed on the leaves of oak trees, which means they can hamper the trees\u2019 growth. This can leave them more vulnerable to disease.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, the tiny hairs on the caterpillars\u2019 bodies can \u201ccause itchy rashes, eye and throat irritation and should not be touched under any circumstances,\u201d said the Government. <\/p>\n<p>What should I do if I see an oak processionary moth caterpillar?<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, don\u2019t touch them.
