He recently covered a long-running strike<\/a> at the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield, which ended in April when a pay deal was reached.<\/p>\n

Big Issue named Davenant as one of its 2026 Changemakers<\/a> at the start of the year. That came after he documented the state of homelessness in the UK with his Outsiders project<\/a> and covered a homeless encampment<\/a> being broken up in London at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n

Davenant turned his attention to protest as successive governments passed laws making activism more difficult, such as the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023.<\/p>\n

The current Labour government\u2019s Crime and Policing Act bans the deliberate use of face coverings to conceal a person\u2019s identity during a protest, and the possession of fireworks, flares and other pyrotechnics at protests.<\/p>\n

Ministers said they \u201cfully support the right of individuals to engage in peaceful protest\u201d but took action over \u201ca rise in disruptive and dangerous tactics used during protests\u201d.<\/p>\n

Davenant<\/a> said his photos capture the reasons why protests continue in the face of growing opposition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe history of protest is complicated but one thing about it is indisputable, that discontent lies at the heart of all protest movements,\u201d the photographer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIntertwined with discontent is disempowerment and the belief that change cannot happen within existing social and political systems.\u201d<\/p>\n
