Glasgow officers are prepared ahead of tomorrow’s anti-racism protest<\/p>\n

Officers in Glasgow<\/a> have been prepped ahead of a significant anti-racism protest<\/a> expected to take place in the city centre tomorrow, June 13.<\/p>\n

The march, organised by Stand up to Racism Scotland, is understood to take place at Buchanan Steps at 1pm and is open to people of all backgrounds. It comes amid a series of violent demonstrations in and around Glasgow in the wake of the alleged attempted murder of Scot Stephen Ogilvie in Belfast on Monday and the tragic killing of Henry Nowak in Southampton.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, June 9, police confirmed that five people were injured<\/a> following a protest in Glasgow city centre, where members of the public were targeted due to the colour of their skin.<\/p>\n

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Waddell issued a statement today, June 12, condemning Tuesday’s actions and ensuring public safety this weekend.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cLarge numbers are expected in Glasgow city centre tomorrow, and a significant policing operation will be in place to support public safety and minimise disruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur role is to facilitate lawful activity, protect the public and respond appropriately to any incidents that may arise.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have the right to express their views lawfully and we will act to keep people safe, protect communities and reduce the impact on residents, businesses and visitors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to engage with organisers and partners as part of our planning, with a focus on public safety and preventing disorder.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognise the concerns felt within communities, particularly following recent events in Belfast, and we understand that those concerns may be heightened at this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important that all communities across Scotland feel supported, protected and able to go about their daily lives without fear of hatred or intimidation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be no repeat of the disorder and violence seen in the city earlier this week, when members of our communities were targeted because of the colour of their skin and officers working to keep people safe were injured.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe behaviour witnessed as rightly been condemned across Scotland as it does not reflect the country\u2019s values.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no place in Scotland for racism, hatred or violence of any kind.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy message is clear. Those attending must do so lawfully and the police will support public safety.<\/p>\n
