aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Published On 15 Jun 202615 Jun 2026<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s Court of Appeal has ruled that the government\u2019s proscription of the activist group Palestine Action as a \u201cterrorist\u201d organisation was lawful, overturning a decision by a lower court.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/6\/14\/uk-court-to-rule-on-palestine-action-terrorist-label-what-we-know\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ruling<\/a> on Monday came after the government lodged an appeal challenging a High Court ruling in February that banning the group under the Terrorism Act 2000 was unlawful and disproportionate.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe concluded that the proscription decision struck a fair balance,\u201d Chief Justice Sue Carr said in her remarks announcing the decision. \u201cWe therefore allowed the home secretary\u2019s appeal against the decision of the Divisional Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, said she would \u201cfight proscription all the way\u201d to the Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights to overturn \u201cone of the most extreme attacks on free speech and the right to protest in modern British history\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,000 arrests linked to support for Palestine Action have been made since the ban was imposed in July 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"31\" data-end=\"147\">In her ruling, Carr said Palestine Action\u2019s conduct was not that of a non-violent, direct-action group.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"152\" data-end=\"352\">Lawyers representing Britain\u2019s interior minister, Shabana Mahmood, argued during an April hearing that claims the ban would significantly curtail freedom of expression were \u201coverstated and incorrect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"767\" data-is-last-node=\"\">Carr acknowledged that while the government\u2019s ban was \u201chighly controversial\u201d, and that the group was \u201cwas supported by many otherwise law-abiding citizens\u201d, it was a \u201cfundamental mistake \u200cto \u200coverlook the fact that Palestine Action overtly promoted unlawful violence amounting to terrorism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"767\" data-is-last-node=\"\">\u201cPalestine Action\u2019s activities have caused injury as well as property damage, and at no stage has Palestine Action suggested that its terrorist activities were either a mistake or an aberration,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Carr said the campaign by Palestine Action was \u201cintended to close down lawful businesses\u201d, adding that \u201cfuture threats and risks posed to third-party individuals and property by Palestine Action were perhaps the most important factors to weigh in the balance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Defend Our Juries, which leads the Lift the Ban campaign, said they were surprised by the court\u2019s verdict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears the courts have been instrumentalised to suppress opposition to genocide, when they should be doing the precise opposite,\u201d they said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to protest against this Government\u2019s embarrassing attempts to cover up
