{"id":63951,"date":"2026-06-16T08:12:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T08:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/63951\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T08:12:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T08:12:07","slug":"general-atomics-wins-contract-for-armys-erap-program-joining-two-other-vendors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/63951\/","title":{"rendered":"General Atomics wins contract for Army&#8217;s ERAP program, joining two other vendors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/general-atomics-electromagnetic-systems\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems<\/a> (GA-EMS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ga.com\/ga-awarded-us-army-extended-range-artillery-projectile-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> it was awarded a contract to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/155mm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">155-mm<\/a> projectile for the Army\u2019s Extended Range Artillery Projective (ERAP) program, joining <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/gd-ots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems<\/a> (GD-OTS) and <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/bae-systems\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BAE Systems<\/a> who were previously awarded for the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time we have expanded our production capacity, advanced our scaling innovations, and reinforced our readiness to design, qualify, produce, and deliver next\u2011generation munitions.\u201d Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS said in a company release Friday. \u201cThis award confirms that GA\u2011EMS is ready to deliver extended\u2011range, precision capabilities that give the warfighter unmatched standoff range and lethality.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ERAP program, also referred to as the XM1155 program, was kickstarted in 2024 and is the Army\u2019s initiative to find a 155-mm projectile that can hit moving targets at ranges beyond 65 km (40 miles) such as <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/tag\/self-propelled-howitzer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">self-propelled howitzers<\/a>, infantry fighting vehicles, multiple rocket launchers, tanks and maritime targets. The XM1155 was previously being developed under the <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2023\/10\/shooting-for-the-moon-armys-2025-budget-to-reflect-artillery-revamp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now scrapped<\/a> Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) program.<\/p>\n<p>According to an Army <a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/opp\/5efd83a191894b83ae1db261de81c623\/view\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">request for information<\/a> from 2024, the service is seeking solutions that can reach Initial Operational Capability (IOC) fielding by fiscal year 2030 and begin low-rate production by the second quarter of FY29.\u00a0The solutions must also be compatible with existing and future howitzers, the Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/289424\/secretary_of_the_army_visits_the_armys_center_of_excellence_for_guns_and_ammunition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">later stated,<\/a> with the latter referring to the Army\u2019s current self-propelled howitzer competition which the service is <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2026\/02\/army-seeks-to-award-self-propelled-howitzer-contract-by-july-prototype-request-coming-soon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to award next month<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GA-EMS\u2019 announcement comes a week after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gdots.com\/gdots-awarded-155mm-extended-range-artillery-projectile-contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GD-OTS announced<\/a> it was also awarded a developmental contract under the ERAP program for its Vulcano 155 Guided Long Range system. The Vulcano is developed by Italian firm Leonardo Electronics and German firm Diehl Defence. GD-OTS is in charge of \u201ctransitioning\u201d the production lines into the United States, per the company\u2019s release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system can achieve [a] range of up to 70 kilometers with high precision, enabled by advanced aerodynamics, GPS guidance and a Semi-Active Laser (SAL) terminal seeker,\u201d GD-OTS\u2019 release from June 5 read. \u201cIn addition to the SAL seeker configuration, the ammunition is also available with advanced Far-Infra Red seeker capable of engaging Sea Targets. Both configurations can provide precision engagement even in GPS-contested environments.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nac-dotc.org\/awards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Defense Department\u2019s Ordnance Technology<\/a> website, BAE Systems was also awarded a contract to develop its version of the new 155-mm projectile.
