{"id":64295,"date":"2026-06-16T16:51:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T16:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/64295\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T16:51:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T16:51:08","slug":"sweden-picks-rolls-royce-smrs-for-first-nuclear-project-in-40-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/64295\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweden picks Rolls-Royce SMRs for first nuclear project in 40 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img post-id=\"72832\" fifulocal-featured=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/rolls-nuclear.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72833\"  \/>The new reactors will be located close to the decommissioned Ringhals Nuclear Power Plant (Green Yoshi\/<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\/deed.en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-SA 3.0<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\nRolls-Royce has been selected to build a nuclear power facility with three small modular reactors (SMRs), each with an output of 470MW for the Swedish grid.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ll be set up on the V\u00e4r\u00f6 Peninsula near the decommissioned Ringhals Nuclear Power Plant in southern Sweden and will be able to generate 12 TWh of fossil-free electricity each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SMRs will use pressurised water reactor technology, also used at Ringhals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rolls-Royce was awarded the contract by development company Videberg Kraft, which is owned by Swedish companies Vattenfall and Industrikraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK government supported Rolls-Royce\u2019s bid, which it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-backing-helps-uks-rolls-royce-smr-win-multibillion-pound-sweden-nuclear-export-contract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">described<\/a> as a \u201cmulti-billion-pound deal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tufan Erginbilgic, Rolls-Royce\u2019s chief executive, said: \u201cRolls-Royce SMR has now been successful in every competitively tendered SMR selection process in Europe and it is now very well placed to become a market leader globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweden\u2019s selection process began in 2022 and included 70 candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin Darelius, Vattenfall\u2019s acting head of new nuclear, <a href=\"https:\/\/group.vattenfall.com\/press-and-media\/pressreleases\/2026\/videberg-kraft-selects-rolls-royce-smr-as-supplier-for-new-nuclear-power-in-sweden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said<\/a>: \u201cOur overall assessment is that they offer the strongest conditions for delivering a successful project.
