Sir Keir Starmer said that he was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d that a Russian frigate had fired warning shots to divert a UK-flagged civilian yacht in the Channel, branding the incident \u201creckless\u201d.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Putin\u2019s Admiral Grigorovich warship was sailing some 20 miles south of the Isle of Wight on Tuesday when it fired its guns, including small arms fire, ahead of the yacht, according to Russia\u2019s foreign ministry, insisting the firing was designed to prevent a collision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat shouldn’t have happened. It is reckless, and the couple on the yacht must’ve been terrified,\u201d Sir Keir said, adding that Britain\u2019s assessment was that the ship was \u201cdrifting\u201d when it fired \u201cwarning shots\u201d.<\/p>\n

The prime minister spoke on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, where US president Donald Trump said he had a \u201cvery good\u201d meeting with president Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> and called on Russia<\/a> to make peace with Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

President Trump said he would do \u201cwhatever I can\u201d to end the war and said Russia<\/a> \u201cshould make a deal\u201d, after G7 leaders commended Ukraine<\/a> for its “progress on the battlefield in recent months”.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo support and accelerate this new momentum, we agree to increase the delivery of air defence capacities, additional systems and interceptors, and long-range capabilities,” a joint statement read.<\/p>\n

Emmanuel Macron has said that President Trump \u201ctook notice\u201d of the fact that Russia was not seeking peace.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a press conference at the G7 summit, the French president said Washington acknowledged that Moscow was not looking to end its war in Ukraine. <\/p>\n

He said the G7 had \u201cshowed a real change in the approach from the US on Ukraine\u201d. <\/p>\n

Trump had earlier suggested that the US could impose sanctions on Russia if it did not take steps to end the war. <\/p>\n
