{"id":65320,"date":"2026-06-18T00:52:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T00:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/65320\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T00:52:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T00:52:09","slug":"rolls-royce-smr-selected-for-swedens-first-new-nuclear-power-plant-in-more-than-40-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/65320\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolls-Royce SMR selected for Sweden\u2019s first new nuclear power plant in more than 40 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK nuclear technology developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolls-royce-smr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Rolls-Royce SMR<\/a> has been selected to deliver three Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) for a major new nuclear power project in Sweden, marking another significant export success for British manufacturing and engineering expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Swedish energy company <a href=\"https:\/\/videbergkraft.se\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Videberg Kraft<\/a> has chosen Rolls-Royce SMR as its technology partner for the Videberg Project on the V\u00e4r\u00f6 peninsula on Sweden\u2019s west coast.<\/p>\n<p>The development will create Sweden\u2019s first new nuclear power plant in more than four decades and add 1,500MWe of clean baseload electricity generation capacity \u2013 equivalent to around 6% of the country\u2019s annual power consumption. Rolls-Royce SMR\u2019s reactor design uses a modular, factory-built approach that enables major components to be manufactured in controlled production environments before being assembled on site. The company says the model improves cost predictability, shortens construction schedules and supports the development of long-term industrial capability and supply chain resilience.<\/p>\n<p>The Rt Hon Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Business and Trade and President of the Board of Trade, described the agreement as a major endorsement of British innovation and manufacturing capability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a major vote of confidence in British innovation and our nuclear industry \u2013 we are now at the heart of the European nuclear renaissance alongside our partners in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood jobs and clean energy security is our Modern Industrial Strategy in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Rt Hon Peter Kyle.<\/p>\n<p>Rolls-Royce SMR is currently progressing through the final stages of the UK regulatory approval process, with the first Swedish unit expected to enter operation in the mid-2030s.<\/p>\n<p>The company believes the Swedish project will help strengthen the foundations already being established in the UK, where it is investing in skills, manufacturing capability and supply chain development to support both domestic deployment and future export opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO of Rolls-Royce Holdings, said the award demonstrated growing momentum behind the company\u2019s SMR programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRolls-Royce SMR has now been successful in every competitively tendered SMR selection process in Europe and it is now very well placed to become a market leader globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSelection by Videberg Kraft reinforces the status of Rolls-Royce SMR as the only company with multiple contractual commitments to deliver SMR units in Europe.
