REUTERS\/Neil Hall\/File Photo\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe Waitrose employee had been told not to intervene to stop shoplifters (Picture: Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>A Waitrose employee of 17 years was sacked after he stopped a shoplifter from running out with a big full of stolen <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/easter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Easter<\/a> eggs.<\/p>\n<p>Walker Smith, a shop assistant at a Waitrose branch in Clapham Junction, south <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>, approached the thief despite the company telling staff not to.<\/p>\n<p>The 54-year-old was going about his normal duties when a customer told him that someone had ransacked the display of Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs and stuffed them in a bag.<\/p>\n<p>Walker spotted the shoplifter, who he said was a repeat offender,and grabbed his bag with the chocolate treats.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SEI_292086795-22db.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-27860257\" alt=\"Lindt Milk Chocolate Easter Egg &amp; Milk Chocolate Gold Bunny\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe shoplifter had been trying to get away with Lindt chocolate bunnies<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Start your day informed with Metro&#8217;s <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/news-updates\/?signup-source=news-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/breaking-news?ito=news-article&amp;?signup_source=news-article-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n<p>There was then a brief struggle over the bag before it snapped and Lindt Gold Bunny eggs fell to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The shoplifter ran out of the exit as Walker threw a piece of broken bunny towards some shopping trolleys \u2018out of frustration\u2019, he told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/apr\/05\/waitrose-employee-sacked-after-stopping-shoplifter-from-taking-easter-eggs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The employee\u2019s actions went against orders from bosses not to approach shoplifters.<\/p>\n<p>But Walker said he acted after the toll of seeing thieves get away with it for years.<\/p>\n<p>He told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/apr\/05\/waitrose-employee-sacked-after-stopping-shoplifter-from-taking-easter-eggs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian<\/a>: \u2018I\u2019ve been there 17 years. I\u2019ve seen it happen every hour of every day for the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s everybody from drug addicts to teenagers nicking bits and bobs or walking out with bottles of wine in their arms. We\u2019re not allowed to do anything.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Walker claimed that security had been scaled back at the shop, with no guards working on Mondays and Thursdays because \u2018shoplifting incidents aren\u2019t reported enough\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>After stopping the criminal from escaping, Walker said he was told off by his manager and apologised, but the matter was escalated.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SEI_292086129-7744.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-27860134\" alt=\"Waitrose in Clapham Junction\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tWalker was dismissed from Waitrose in Clapham Junction, which he called \u2018family\u2019 (Picture: google maps)<\/p>\n<p>He was brought into a meeting with two store managers, where he made a final plea to bosses not to kick him out of his \u2018family\u2019, but he was dismissed, the Guardian reports.<\/p>\n<p>Walker, who is diagnosed with <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/anxiety\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anxiety<\/a>, said: \u2018I tried to stay strong and I didn\u2019t say a word but inside I was crying. They led me out the back door by the bins. I just felt demoralised.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He fears he might become homeless, having just moved into his own studio flat after living with flatmates for 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Waitrose is like my family. My friends are there,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was there for 17 years, I must have been doing something right. I\u2019m not a bad or violent or aggressive person. I just got frustrated seeing this day in and day out and not seeing Waitrose do much about it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Businesses have been plagued by shoplifting in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Figures hit a 20-year high last year, with 530,643 reported shoplifting offences\u00a0recorded in the year to March 2025.<\/p>\n<p>However, campaigners have warned that the number of thefts is considerably higher due to underreporting.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS)\u00a0suggests that as many as 5.8million incidents of shoplifting were recorded in the last year.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/marks-spencer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marks &amp; Spencer<\/a>\u2019s chief executive Stuart Machin said the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-government\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">government<\/a> and mayor of London needed to crack down on retail <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/crime-news\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crime<\/a>, arguing it had become \u2018more brazen, more organised and more aggressive\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The retail trade union Usdaw also warned that workers faced \u2018unacceptable\u2019 levels of violence linked to shop thefts.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tWhat has Waitrose said?\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/waitrose\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Waitrose<\/a> spokesperson said of the Guardian\u2019s report: \u2018The safety and security of our Partners and customers couldn\u2019t be more important to us, and we have policies in place to protect both.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019ve had incidents where our Partners have been hospitalised when challenging shoplifters. Luckily, they have always recovered, but that might not always be the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There is a serious danger to life in tackling shoplifters. We refuse to put anyone\u2019s life at risk and that\u2019s why we have policies in place that are very clearly understood and must be strictly followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As a responsible employer, we never want to be in a position where we are notifying families of a tragedy because someone tried to stop a theft. Nothing we sell is worth risking lives for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The reporting on this does not cover the full facts of the situation.
