National Grid has launched the first stage of public consultation on proposals for the Western Link 2 electricity connection between Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n
The company said the project forms part of Uwchraddio\u2019r Grid \/ The Great Grid Upgrade and would help carry more renewable electricity to homes and businesses across Wales.<\/p>\n
National Grid added that the link would be capable of carrying up to 2GW of electricity in either direction, enough to power around two million homes.<\/p>\n
Western Link 2 is a joint proposal by National Grid and Scottish Power Energy Networks for a predominantly subsea high-voltage direct current electricity link between Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n
In North Wales, the proposals include about 260km of offshore cable to a landfall at Caernarfon Bay, about 25km of underground cable, a new converter station near Pentir and works to extend the existing Pentir substation.<\/p>\n
National Grid said the project would support a multi-billion-pound supply chain and create skilled jobs in North Wales.<\/p>\n
The first stage of consultation runs from 23 June to 21 July 2026.<\/p>\n
Leandro Vacirca, project director at National Grid, said: \u201cWestern Link 2 will play an important role in delivering the electricity infrastructure Wales needs for a secure and more efficient energy future.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs demand grows, it is essential we make better use of renewable energy sources by upgrading the electricity network so that clean energy isn\u2019t wasted.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are seeking feedback on early-stage proposals which will give communities and stakeholders the opportunity to influence our plans.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLocal knowledge is important in the development of Western Link 2 and will help us minimise impacts wherever possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
