{"id":69022,"date":"2026-06-23T22:20:33","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T22:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/69022\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T22:20:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T22:20:33","slug":"britains-andy-burnham-prepares-for-labour-leadership-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/69022\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain&#8217;s Andy Burnham prepares for Labour leadership race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Newly elected British lawmaker <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uk-labour-andy-burnham-profile-c9fc2bd8b66d168de0b57408b397bff8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Burnham<\/a> met the man he hopes to replace, Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/keir-starmer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keir Starmer<\/a>, on Tuesday as he prepares for a leadership contest in which he may be the only contender.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham is the strong front-runner to succeed Starmer, who announced Monday that he would step down within weeks after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/prime-minister-starmer-resign-burnham-mandelson-2cc8af7912e7f7c1df103f4b8b16bd6d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two years<\/a> in office marred by missteps and judgment errors that eroded his standing with his party and the public.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham, a former Cabinet minister who served since 2017 as mayor of Greater Manchester, won a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uk-makerfield-election-burnham-starmer-ff06efb52a1f6593c94617cceeb9b603\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">special election<\/a> last week for a seat in Parliament with the express aim of challenging Starmer for leadership of the Labour Party and the country.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham\u2019s chances got a big boost on Monday when former Health Secretary <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/britain-politics-starmer-streeting-rayner-6bd359148664c9478ed01b36ebb6e37d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wes Streeting<\/a>, who was considered his main rival, announced his support.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer and Burnham met Tuesday for the first time since last week\u2019s special election. Neither side released details of what was discussed. Burnham was also meeting Labour lawmakers as he seeks to build momentum for his bid.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. parliamentary system allows governing parties to change leaders \u2014 and thus prime ministers \u2014 without the need for a national election. The next general election doesn\u2019t have to be held until 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations for the Labour leadership will open on July 9 and close a week later. If Burnham is the only contender, he could be prime minister by July 17. If there is a contest, the winner should be in place by the time Parliament returns from its summer break on Sept. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer told the weekly meeting of his Cabinet on Tuesday that he will try to make the transition to his successor as easy as possible. But while Starmer wants to carry on with business as usual, he\u2019s not allowed to make new major policy announcements or spending commitments during what remains of his time in office.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union says a key U.K.-EU summit scheduled for July 22 will be postponed because of the uncertainty in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The British government is still expected to publish a long-awaited defense investment plan \u2014 which sparked the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/britain-defense-secretary-john-healey-quits-533cb2637192f045ca6247ab5a402bac\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resignation of Defense Secretary John Healey<\/a> on June 11 \u2014 before a NATO summit in Turkey on July 7 and 8 that Starmer is likely to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham\u2019s economic plans aren\u2019t yet known<\/p>\n<p>Burnham was a popular mayor of Greater Manchester, overseeing a period of rapid regeneration for the city in northern England where the Industrial Revolution was forged. It comes as Britain marks the 10th anniversary of its <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brexit-britain-anniversary-10-years-economy-b947ef83d4069d236a9a3163ef9d8633\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vote to leave the European Union<\/a>, a decision that still <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brexit-anniversary-economy-leave-remain-94ec535c96a3d7bfdeee087683bd9012\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roils the country\u2019s economy<\/a> and politics.<\/p>\n<p>After weeks of insisting that he would fight to keep his job, Starmer conceded to growing pressure to hand over to a new leader who can try and revive the government\u2019s flagging fortunes. He led Labour to a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uk-elections-2024-result-labour-starmer-exit-sunak-e94f379ea893ec17711fd82cec03b603\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landslide election victory<\/a> in July 2024, but his popularity and that of the party have plummeted since then. <\/p>\n<p>Starmer has struggled to deliver promised economic growth, repair <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/doctors-strike-england-nhs-0a073410535f8790f0e700720a11c344\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tattered public services<\/a> and ease the cost of living.
