{"id":69701,"date":"2026-06-24T17:15:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T17:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/69701\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T17:15:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T17:15:15","slug":"natwest-boss-accused-of-scaremongering-over-ai-job-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/69701\/","title":{"rendered":"NatWest boss accused of \u2018scaremongering\u2019 over AI job cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The chief executive of NatWest, Paul Thwaite, has been accused of \u201cscaremongering\u201d after the 54-year-old said it is inevitable the bank\u2019s 60,000-strong workforce will change as a result of AI.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a business summit hosted by The Times, Thwaite said that he did not know whether the bank\u2019s roster of employees would shrink over the next decade but that it \u201cis definitely going to change\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cIn effect there will be roles that currently exist that absolutely to all intents and purposes [will be] delivered by AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Sullivan, CEO of think-tank Parliament Street, called the comments irresponsible. \u201cAnother day, another City chief scaremongering the workforce without due consideration for the consequences,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need from finance chiefs is a clear action plan for how tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanker.com\/content\/6df758ff-7e51-4d25-9e5c-98f112bcf115\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI will reshape the jobs market<\/a> and turbocharge the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenny MacAulay, CEO of accounting platform Acting Office, added: \u201cAI will undoubtedly replace jobs, but what\u2019s never talked about is the new roles it will help create. The banking and finance industry is notorious for mismanaging tech deployments, creating expensive and ineffective IT estates. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI will indeed sweep away crumbling systems and streamline a new wave of productivity. But these systems will still need to be reviewed, fine-tuned and modelled, leading to an eventual net gain in job creation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thwaite\u2019s comments come after other bank CEOs have sounded the alarm about AI deployment and its impact on the workforce. Morgan Stanley forecast in December that 200,000 European banking jobs could be cut by 2030 as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Standard Chartered boss Bill Winters also came under fire last month and was forced to apologise after describing employees facing cuts as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanker.com\/content\/9e572e96-072d-404a-a42b-bbf222f2a143\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201clower-value human capital\u201d<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As he announced plans to sweep away almost 8,000 back-office jobs by 2030, Winters said: \u201cIt\u2019s not cost-cutting.
