<\/p>\nAs temperatures soared for weeks on end, there was fun to be had but there were also problems<\/p>\n

It\u2019s 50 years since we basked, sweated and sweltered through the great heatwave of 1976 – a summer when it felt as if the UK had temporarily relocated to the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n
Day after day, under cloudless skies, the sun blazed down as millions headed for the seaside, countryside and local parks – or simply lounged in their back gardens trying to stay cool.<\/p>\n
After warmer than usual temperatures during April and May, the intense heat settled in from mid\u2010June and stayed until the end of August – with the fiercest spell coming in a scorching two\u2010week run between June 23 and July 8.<\/p>\n
The balmy weather regularly made front page news in the Evening Chronicle. \u2018Another warm week ahead,\u2019 was the headline on the 23rd; two days later, it was \u2018Britain scorches in Euro sunshine\u2019, as we reported that many cars making for the Hoppings on Newcastle Town Moor were breaking down due to their radiators overheating.<\/p>\n
Five decades on, the period continues to evoke much nostalgia. The pop charts provided a memorable soundtrack during the unprecedented heatwave. The likes of \u2018You To Me Are Everything\u2019 by the Real Thing, \u2018Young Hearts Run Free\u2019 by Candi Staton, and \u2018Let\u2019s Stick Together\u2019 by Bryan Ferry, were huge hits at the time.<\/p>\n
On television, The Bionic Woman, starring Lindsey Wagner made its debut, while those watching the Olympic Games broadcast live from Montreal, Canada, would see Tyneside athlete Brendan Foster win bronze in the 10,000 metres.<\/p>\n
At Newcastle\u2019s Odeon cinema on Pilgrim Street, you could see One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and The Return Of The Pink Panther, while the cast of Dad\u2019s Army, including Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier, were starring in a \u2018music and laughter show\u2019 at the Theatre Royal.<\/p>\n
All the while, the mercury kept rising. As June turned into July, the Chronicle warned \u2018Cool It! There\u2019s more on the way.\u2019 Daytime temperatures in Newcastle were reaching 25.5\u00b0C, Tyneside pubs were doing brisk business with some running out of beer, while the stampede for ice cream was leaving suppliers pushed to the limit.<\/p>\n
But it soon became clear that it wasn’t all fun in the sun. North East hospitals were treating hundreds of people every day for sunburn and dehydration, motoring organisations were struggling to reach the high number of cars overheating on the region\u2019s roads, and Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade warned that heat-scorched grassy areas and forests were becoming virtual tinderboxes.<\/p>\n
Occasionally, the hot weather led to heated tempers. The Daily Mirror urged Britons to keep their cool amid reports of a rise in the number of pub brawls and family punch-ups. The newspaper suggested, like our European neighbours, we should consider taking \u201csensible siestas\u201d and \u201cstop rushing to the seaside like lemmings\u201d.<\/p>\n
Nationally, temperatures regularly exceeded 30\u00b0C across England, peaking at 35.9\u00b0C in Cheltenham on July 3. With some areas having no rain for months, the UK experienced its most severe drought for generations, prompting Prime Minister James Callaghan to appoint Denis Howell as \u2018minister for drought\u2019.<\/p>\n
In the news, headlines told of forest fires, hosepipe bans, and rising food and beer prices, with the Cabinet even considering imposing a three-day working week. There were hundreds of heat-related deaths and many more hospital admissions, while southern England was invaded by 24 billion starving ladybirds searching for food.<\/p>\n
Finally, after week upon week of unbroken, excessively hot and dry conditions, at the end of August the weather broke. There was welcome heavy rain on Tyneside, while ferocious storms lashed central and southern Britain. The heatwave was over.<\/p>\n
Fifty years on, the \u201cendless\u201d summer of 1976 lives on in Britain\u2019s collective memory. There have been days since then when higher temperatures have been recorded. But, as a Met Office spokesman pointed out: \u201cThe reason 1976 stands out is because of the persistence of the warm, dry, sunny conditions. It is still the UK\u2019s hottest summer on record for average maximum temperatures, the UK\u2019s sunniest summer on record, and an exceptionally severe event in terms of lack of rain for a prolonged period.\u201d<\/p>\n
