Professor Bae Choong-shik of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been appointed as the new president of KAIST.<\/p>\n
The KAIST Board of Trustees announced that on the 29th it held an extraordinary board meeting at the KAIST Kim Jae-chul AI Graduate School Seoul Yangjae Campus in Yangjae-dong, Seoul, and appointed Professor Bae as the 18th president.\u00a0<\/p>\n
President-designate Bae graduated from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at Seoul National University and obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London in the United Kingdom. Since joining KAIST in 1998, he has served in key posts including head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and dean of the College of Engineering. He is a leading authority in eco-friendly energy and carbon-neutral power engineering and was recently recognized for his academic achievements by being selected as a chaired professor at Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).<\/p>\n
As head of the \u201cCOVID-19 Response Science and Technology New Deal Project Group,\u201d he contributed to building a science-and-technology-based crisis response system, and as president of the Carbon Neutral Fuel Technology Research Association, he has put forward future propulsion technology policies for responding to the climate crisis and achieving energy transition. He has also taken part in shaping national science and technology policy as a full member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea and chair of the climate subcommittee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\u2019 Science and Technology Diplomacy Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n
Within the university, he has received the KAIST Research Award, Public Service Award, and Special Award for Outstanding Faculty in Social Service, among others, in recognition of his contributions to education, research, and service.<\/p>\n
KAIST stated, \u201cWe expect the new president Bae, drawing on his expertise in the energy and carbon-neutrality fields and his policy leadership, to spearhead future convergence science and technology research and further strengthen KAIST\u2019s competitiveness as a world-class research-oriented university.\u201d<\/p>\n
President-designate Bae will be formally confirmed as the 18th president of KAIST after obtaining consent from the Minister of Education and approval from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT.<\/p>\n
On February 26 this year, the KAIST Board voted on whether to appoint one of the three shortlisted presidential candidates: current KAIST president Lee Kwang-hyung, Professor Kim Jeong-ho of KAIST\u2019s School of Electrical Engineering, and former UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) president Lee Yong-hoon. However, the motion was rejected because none of the candidates won a majority. With the presidential appointment already delayed for a year at that time, President Lee expressed his intention to resign on February 27, citing moral responsibility, but later withdrew his resignation on March 13.<\/p>\n
