Barclays has taken control of its global headquarters based out of Canary Wharf<\/a> in a \u00a3750m deal hailed as a \u201cstrong endorsement\u201d of the financial district and the capital itself. <\/p>\n The blue-chip lender has entered a long-term leasehold interest agreement with Canary Wharf Group that grants the bank to use the property \u2013 based at One Churchill Place \u2013 for up to 999 years.<\/p>\n The deal is expected to be neutral to the bank\u2019s CET1 ratio, a key metric for a lender\u2019s financial health.<\/p>\n Barclays\u2019 original lease was set to expire in 2039 but it said the fresh acquisition will pave the way for ongoing investment in its workplace and enable a flexible space for colleagues as \u201cworking patterns and business needs continue to evolve\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThis acquisition gives us long-term certainty, greater flexibility over our London footprint and reinforces our continued confidence in London as one of the world\u2019s leading global financial centres,\u201d Barclays boss CS Venkatakrishnan said.<\/p>\n Shobi Khan, chief executive of the Canary Wharf Group, said: \u201cBarclays\u2019 decision to acquire its global headquarters at One Churchill Place is a strong endorsement of both Canary Wharf and London.\u201d<\/p>\n Canary Wharf\u2019s resurgence<\/p>\n The Isle of Dogs has enjoyed a major resurgence over the last year, attracting all branches of the financial services industry.<\/p>\n Payments juggernaut Visa laid out plans to switch its European headquarters to Canary Wharf in a move that will see the firm occupy a 300,000 square foot for a 15-year term at One Canada Square.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n \t\t\tCity trader: \u2018My coke dealer came to the Canary Wharf office every day at 9am\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n Fintech unicorn\u00a0Zopa Bank also set out<\/a> plans last year to double its office footprint with a new headquarters in the Docklands.<\/p>\n The new office, located at 20 Water Street in\u00a0Canary Wharf<\/a>, will span 44,000 square feet and host Zopa\u2019s 900 current employees.<\/p>\n JP Morgan is also tipped to give the area its largest boost with its biggest tower ever \u2013 if the tax incentive is there.<\/p>\n The\u00a0US banking behemoth<\/a> announced plans for the 3m square feet tower in the aftermath of the Budget, where banks dodged a highly-speculated tax raid. Rachel Reeves touted the investment as a \u201cmulti-billion pound vote of confidence in the UK economy\u201d.<\/p>\n The project is expected to inject as much as \u00a310bn into the local economy and create an additional 7,800 jobs across construction and other local industries. Once finished it will house up to 12,000 and serve as the bank\u2019s main headquarters in UK and is biggest presence across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.<\/p>\n
