\t\tLloyds has been accused of debanking The Canary.\t<\/p>\n
Lloyds Banking Group has been accused of debanking<\/a> the left-wing news website The Canary in a move that has left the media outlet with \u201cbarely any funds\u201d.<\/p>\n The bank was slammed by the media firm on Tuesday for allegedly \u201cwithholding a substantial amount of our money\u201d and debanking them after nearly a decade of use.<\/p>\n \u201cLloyds has not explained why it has taken this action. Despite multiple communications from us, the bank has not been forthcoming with its reasoning,\u201d it claimed.<\/p>\n The Canary said it was now in a \u201cfinancially precarious situation\u201d and did not know when \u201cmoney that Lloyds is holding will be returned\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n The firm speculated the reasons behind the decision and said whilst it does \u201cnot currently know the reasons behind our debanking<\/a>, we cannot afford to be naive about this\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt is an outrage that the Canary has been unceremoniously dropped into financial instability with no notice or explanation from Lloyds,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n The Canary \u2013 which brands itself as \u201cradical working-class media<\/a>\u201d \u2013 unveiled plans in May to launch a daily weekday national newspaper in the UK, with some 25,000 copies distributed at news agents across England and Wales.<\/p>\n The Canary added it was aware \u201cother politically engaged people have suffered similar actions by other banks\u201d.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n \t\t\tLloyds Bank and Halifax customers hit with app outage<\/a><\/p>\n Lloyds has did not immediately respond to request for comment.<\/p>\n Canary puts spotlight on politics<\/p>\n The move lays bare the extent to which banks have distanced themselves from individuals and organisations viewed as politically controversial.<\/p>\n In one of the most notorious cases of the last few years, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage was dropped by the King\u2019s Bank Coutts, part of Natwest Group.<\/a><\/p>\n Farage\u2019s debanking scandal led to the resignation of Natwest boss Alison Rose after Coutts identified the politician as a politically exposed person (PEP).<\/p>\n PEPs refer to those who hold public office and as a result are subject to extra due diligence by financial firms. Farage has long claimed his account was shut down unfairly because the bank disagreed with his personal and political beliefs.<\/p>\n
