There is clearly an enormous gap between where we are now and where we need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Sir Richard Barrons\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"600\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3e5f820e99245ed3e801736d1c6ef4e4.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sir Richard Barrons is trying to persuade City funds to help close the military\u2019s \u2018enormous\u2019 funding gap &#8211; Leon Neal\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The war in Iran as well as the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine have fuelled fears that Britain\u2019s defence sector is not properly funded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sir Richard said last month that Britain\u2019s Armed Forces were so depleted <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2026\/03\/29\/armed-forces-good-week-again\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:they could only \u201cseize a small market town on a good day\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;they could only \u201cseize a small market town on a good day\u201d&quot;}\">they could only \u201cseize a small market town on a good day\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Alongside CityUK, he is looking at a number of ways in which more private sector cash could be funnelled into the defence sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This includes providing more capital for start-ups in the sector so they can grow, and addressing government red tape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In particular, the group is looking at ways that government procurement rules could be changed to make lending to defence companies easier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bank bosses have in the past criticised the opaque nature of the procurement process, which makes it difficult for lenders to obtain basic information on defence companies to which they hope to lend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The organisation is also looking at how the Government could kick-start private equity and innovation interest in the defence industry, as it has successfully done in the finance sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sir Richard said: \u201cOne [of the core ideas of the strategic defence review] is to recognise we live in this completely new era of a much more turbulent, dangerous and uncertain world of state-led confrontation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe difference for the UK is our approach to defence and that sense of war being an abstract thing \u2013 in the world we live in today, that no longer applies &#8230; We\u2019re dealing with existential risk.
