Some are genuine, whilst others are merely myths. But picture a network of caves and tunnels extending all the way from the capital 50 miles to the coast at Brighton.

Through such caves it was once claimed that pirates and smugglers would haul barrels of rum and boxes of tobacco and lace all the way to London to supply the affluent with everything they wanted without paying import duty.

But could this remarkable tale actually be true? Well, certainly elements of it are. The caves are documented in an article published in the Croydon Review and Timetable in January 1880. In the piece called “Haunted”, the anonymous writer describes the caves as “shudderus” – presumably meaning extremely frightening.

He states he was informed they were a “robbers cave” and were situated at Plough Lane, near the road to Bandon Hill in Mitcham. Today they are known as Beddington Caves. The anonymous writer notes that it was once suggested the caves extended all the way to Brighton but then disputes this in his article by stating that he had examined the caves and “there is northing very remarkable about them”.

The now sealed off entrance where children explored in 1960s and 70s

The Plough Inn pub in Beddington where the entrance to the caves used to be opposite(Image: _geographorguk_)

The author claims he was informed the caves were uncovered by somebody who was ploughing a field above them and unexpectedly fell into the “robbers den”. The caves are fairly well known locally and their entrance is to be found near the Plough Inn on Plough Lane.

It’s now bricked up of course, but local people remember it lay in a steep bank in some brambles opposite the pub and they used to lower themselves into it.

Local resident Sue Chester recalls how she used to visit them: “As for the tunnels, we stumbled across them by accident. When we were teenagers [mid-1960s to the early 1970s], we went exploring and found the entrance. If you go to the Plough public house and look across the road to where the back gardens of the houses come down to meet the road, there amongst the brambles, is the entrance to one of the many tunnels.

“As teenagers, we used to go ‘down the hole’, as that is what it was, just a hole, no bigger than a fox’s hole. When we got inside, it would open up into a bigger tunnel. Going further in, we found a large ‘hall’ which was big enough to have a small banquet. We used to play down there. Suddenly, they were bricked up. We later learnt that the council had done this for safety reasons.”

Tunnels linking from Nonsuch Park

Author of London Lore, Steve Roud, said lots of wild theories have been spread around about the caves over the years. One claims they were used by Romans as an escape from the nearby Beddington Villa when it was being attacked.

It was also said that they led all the way from Nonsuch Park and linked up with the Tudor palace that once stood there. Other tales suggest they linked to just about every historic home on the area including Carew Lodge and Beddinton Manor.

There’s even one tale that the ghost of Sir Walter Raleigh still walks the caves, spooking anyone who dares to enter. But Mr Roud says that geology decrees that most of this simply can’t be true.

The presence of local rivers, chalk faces and gravel beds mean the caves can at best be only a few hundred yards long and were dug to mine sand for industrial purposes. The tunnels aren’t mentioned in any documents until the 1860s which means a lot of the older theories about them are likely to be nonsense – or at very least just supposition.

According to the Mysterious Mitcham website, the system appears to be a combination of natural and man-made elements. The London Speliological Society, after examining the tunnels in 1940, suggested they were likely the result of sand mining.

Their investigations led them to Queen Elizabeth’s Walk nearby, where a manhole cover hid an entrance to the caves. However, they were unable to secure permission for further exploration. The Chelsea Speliological Society also later inspected the system, but not until 1968, by which point little evidence of the mines remained.

It’s known that during the 19th century, Beddington Cave was part of the lease for the adjacent inn, with the publican utilising it as a cool, dark cellar for storing barrels of alcohol. In the 1920s, an elderly parishioner named Mr Roffey shared stories with Rev.

Thomas Bentham that he’d heard as a child about donkey trains transporting smuggled goods through the night across the downs into Beddington. These smugglers were also rumoured to stash their contraband in the caves.

Whilst many tales about the caves may be conjecture, they can’t necessarily be dismissed. No comprehensive exploration of the cave system has ever been conducted, and now that the entrances are sealed, it’s doubtful one ever will be. Consequently, none of the stories about the caves can be entirely discounted.

Looking for more from MyLondon?
