Thousands of people across four upstate counties were without power on Friday after a storm swept through the region late Thursday evening, downing utility lines during a sweltering heat wave.<\/p>\n

This is at least the\u00a0second time this week<\/a> that widespread power outages have been reported. Storms also knocked out power to thousands on Wednesday evening, sending crews scrambling to restore service on Thursday.<\/p>\n

More than 10,000 National Grid customers were without power in\u00a0Essex, Greene and Warren counties as of 11 a.m. Friday, according to\u00a0the utility’s outage map. That includes customers in the village of Lake George. New York State Electric and Gas reported more than 4,900 customers in Columbia County without power. Another 800 Central Hudson customers in Greene County were also without power.<\/p>\n

John\u00a0Howe\u200d, mayor of the village of Chatham in Columbia County, declared a village-wide state of emergency late Thursday night due to “severe storm damage,” according to an announcement from the village. The village’s fire department, in a series of updates on social media, said the village had asked residents to conserve water as first responders responded to reports of multiple downed wires, some of which had sparked fires.<\/p>\n

The outages come as a brutal heat wave hits the\u00a0East Coast, testing the state’s electrical grid<\/a>. In an extreme heat warning issued for a wide swath of the Hudson Valley and greater Capital Region, the National Weather Service\u00a0is warning that temperatures could reach the upper 90s on Friday, but could feel like upward of 110 degrees.
