{"id":76703,"date":"2026-07-04T23:33:49","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T23:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/76703\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T23:33:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T23:33:49","slug":"tale-of-two-cities-london-leaps-ahead-in-global-finance-but-domestic-growth-stalls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/76703\/","title":{"rendered":"Tale of two cities: London leaps ahead in global finance but domestic growth stalls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tFriday 03 July 2026 5:00 am<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tThursday 02 July 2026 3:57 pm\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2154617464-e1764336196462.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Getty Images number 2154617464 depicts a relevant scene for the articles unidentified content, suitable for business context.\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tThe City has boomed post-Brexit but faced domestic challenges.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The City of London has cemented its dominance in international finance ten years on from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/brexit-10-year-on-business-does-not-want-a-referendum-rerun-says-cbi-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Brexit vote<\/a> but faced sobering domestic growth that failed to match the momentum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The capital sees more international activity conducted than the next eight largest financial centres in Europe combined, according to a new report by New Financial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK was given an overall score of 54 by the think tank, which grades hubs on the dollar value of market activity they attract compared to the largest player on earth, the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London\u2019s rating towers above the combined value of Germany (13), Luxembourg (9), France (9), Netherlands (7), Ireland (5), Switzerland (5), Spain (3) and Sweden (3).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figures come ten years after Britain\u2019s vote to leave the European Union shocked markets and sparked fears of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/financial-services-contributed-a-tenth-of-uk-economic-output-in-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">financial services<\/a> exodus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fears emerged that a fleet of well-paid City jobs would move over to hotspots across the 27-state bloc. Whilst Wall Street\u2019s top banks have added around 11,000 employees to their EU branches post-Brexit to comply with European regulatory requirements, the City has continued to flourish.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total number of jobs in London\u2019s booming financial hub has ballooned to some 675,000 from around 500,000 previously, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityoflondon.gov.uk\/assets\/Business\/COL-City-Stats-Factsheet-February-2026-Accessible.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">according to data<\/a> from the Office for National Statistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">International market activity in the UK grew by 20 per cent in the last ten years, surpassing the global average of 17 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on the domestic front growth was a sluggish three per cent \u2013 far below the average 18 per cent \u2013 revealing a stark divide between the City\u2019s global appeal and the reality of its domestic economy.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/fenchurch-advisory-partners-to-combine-with-broadhaven-capital-partners-creating-the-preeminent-international-investment-bank-serving-the-financial-services-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Fenchurch Advisory Partners to Combine With Broadhaven Capital Partners, Creating the Preeminent International Investment Bank Serving the Financial Services Sector<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tDomestic performance \u2018not good news for UK\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Financial warned the City\u2019s dominant international display was \u201cmuch more significant than its domestic role in financing the British economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to its mammoth international finance score, the City scored a mere nine for its domestic financial activity, putting it in fourth place globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not good news given the UK\u2019s need to boost economic growth and close its significant investment gaps,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The domestic side of the index measures market activity that is tied to one destination such as banks lending money to local companies or funding infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK scored six out of 100 for funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/inside-the-fintech-industrys-pensions-gambit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pension assets<\/a> tied to domestic growth with around three per cent of pension fund money in British stocks, compared to 50 per cent 25 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nation\u2019s broader business environment conditions was also found to have worsened in 10 out of 15 metrics in the decade, with the report specifically pointing to tax competitiveness and quality of infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New Financial report positions the UK as the single-most international financial centre, with cross-border financial flows accounting for 56 per cent of all its measured financial activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That places it above other major hubs including Hong Kong (50 per cent), Luxembourg (45 per cent), Singapore (31 per cent), and the United States (26 per cent).<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/nscale-and-elevenlabs-power-41bn-ai-boom-as-britain-cements-unicorn-crown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Nscale and ElevenLabs power \u00a341bn AI boom as Britain cements unicorn crown<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp;
