JD Vance has said he hopes Andy Burnham can fix Britain<\/a> after years of \u201cfailed leadership\u201d.<\/p>\n

The US vice-president claimed the UK had been \u201cfailed by its leadership for a long time\u201d, expressing a wish that the next prime minister could address the changes demanded by voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I see is six prime ministers in the last few years,\u201d said Mr Vance in an interview with The Sunday Times.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat that says to me is that something is very broken about British politics and that people are really crying out for significant structural change<\/a>. I hope that Andy Burnham \u2013 and if not Andy Burnham, somebody else \u2013 is able to deliver it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he hoped whoever succeeded Sir Keir Starmer as prime minister \u201cfigures out how to get Britain back on track\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir announced his decision to step down from No 10 last month<\/a> after just under two years in charge.<\/p>\n

The outgoing Prime Minister had presided over a renewal in relations with Donald Trump, but things soured after he opposed the US president\u2019s ambitions to take over Greenland and refused to join his war against Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since then, including in his resignation well-wishes<\/a>, Mr Trump has been highly critical of Sir Keir\u2019s inability to get a grip on illegal migration and the UK\u2019s energy crisis.<\/p>\n

Although voicing similar criticisms, Mr Vance has been a supporter of Britain. He has built a strong personal relationship with David Lammy<\/a>, the Deputy Prime Minister, bonding over faith, family and fishing.<\/p>\n

Mr Vance described Britain as an \u201camazing place\u201d with the \u201cmost amazing people in the world\u201d outside the US.<\/p>\n

In the interview, he claimed he knew little about Mr Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, but added: \u201cWhoever is the prime minister, we\u2019re going to work with them as successfully as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

The front-runner to be the next prime minister has been highly critical of Mr Trump and his administration over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe path we\u2019re on, if we are not careful, is a path towards the politics of the United States of America,\u201d Mr Burnham said on the campaign trail in June.<\/p>\n

While he did not directly attribute the phenomenon to Mr Trump, he claimed Americans were in the midst of a \u201cpolarised, poisonous politics where people in communities don\u2019t work together any more\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an interview last year, Mr Burnham said he believed Mr Trump was bringing \u201cinstability\u201d<\/a> to the US through his Right-wing politics.<\/p>\n

The US president and administration officials have been equally critical of Mr Burnham, arguing that his Left-wing politics \u201cof unfettered migration and destructive globalism have made once-great European cities unrecognisable \u2013 allowing criminals to run wild and anti-Semitism to thrive\u201d.<\/p>\n

In his first public comments about Mr Burnham, Mr Trump described him as an \u201cextremely liberal mayor of a town\u201d<\/a>, predicting that he would not resume drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea.<\/p>\n
