A Distributed Energy Resource Connected to the National Grid<\/p>\n
The FLL is designed as a distributed energy resource (DER) platform capable of supplying both offshore operations and the public grid simultaneously. According to Seatrium, the platform first generates electricity for its own operations before exporting surplus power to the national grid. The commissioning was observed by Tan See Leng, Singapore’s minister for manpower and minister-in-charge of energy and science and technology.<\/p>\n
Wey Lii Lee, senior vice president of Seatrium Digital, described the first electricity transfer as a “key milestone,” according to the company. He indicated that the FLL positions itself as a “grid-integrated asset that contributes to national energy resilience while powering internal demands.” The deployment of the battery energy storage system is part of a broader trend in stationary storage development, mirroring the recent delivery by Envision Energy of 660 MWh of battery storage in South Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n ABS Certification and Remote Control Capabilities<\/p>\n The platform has received the Remote-CON notation from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), enabling remote monitoring and control of key onboard systems from an onshore operations centre. Patrick Ryan, ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer, stated that the project demonstrates the implementation of remote-control capability under the classification society’s standards. “Safety is fundamental to the successful deployment of new remote-control and distributed energy technologies in offshore and nearshore environments,” he added.<\/p>\n Seatrium also operates an onshore Remote Operations Centre built on assurance frameworks developed by DNV. The company indicates that the centre uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automate data processing, monitor energy systems, and support operational decisions. It also incorporates cybersecurity measures, including post-quantum encryption.<\/p>\n Support from the Energy Market Regulator<\/p>\n The project was developed with support from the Energy Market Authority (EMA), Singapore’s energy market regulator, which backed the deployment of the battery energy storage system. Violet Chen, EMA director for solar and grid solutions, said the FLL provides an environment for testing new energy technologies under real operational conditions. “As Singapore’s grid incorporates more variable renewable energy, storage solutions like this will be important to maintain grid stability and resilience,” she stated.<\/p>\n Seatrium says it intends to apply the platform’s capabilities to future floating energy storage and nearshore electrification projects.
