Britain\u2019s electricity system is facing an unusual summer challenge as extreme temperatures put pressure on power generation and push demand higher, prompting the national grid operator to call for additional capacity.<\/p>\n
The National Energy System Operator (Neso) issued its third electricity margin notice of the year, warning that supply buffers could become tighter during Thursday evening\u2019s peak period as a prolonged heatwave sweeps across the UK and Europe.<\/p>\n
The notice, covering the period from 6.30pm to 10.30pm, does not indicate an immediate risk of blackouts. Instead, it is a market signal designed to encourage additional generation to become available and provide a wider safety margin between electricity supply and demand.<\/p>\n
However, the warning highlights a growing challenge for energy systems as climate volatility creates pressure not only during traditional winter peaks but also during periods of extreme summer heat.<\/p>\n
Electricity demand typically rises during cold weather as households increase heating use. But hotter conditions are increasingly creating their own strain.<\/p>\n
High temperatures can reduce the efficiency of some power<\/a> stations, affect cooling systems and limit available generation capacity. At the same time, demand increases as homes and businesses rely<\/a> more heavily on fans, cooling equipment and air conditioning.<\/p>\n Neso said the latest warning was linked to \u201cextreme temperatures<\/a> across Europe\u201d which had reduced the availability of some forms of generation.<\/p>\n The operator said it would continue monitoring conditions<\/a> and take any action required to maintain secure supplies.<\/p>\n The latest notice follows two similar interventions issued in June, both of which were later cancelled as supply conditions improved<\/a>.<\/p>\n Historically, electricity margin warnings have been more closely associated with winter periods, when heating demand places pressure<\/a> on the system. The emergence of repeated summer warnings<\/a> reflects the changing demands placed on national infrastructure.<\/p>\n Energy analysts have increasingly warned that the transition towards a more electrified economy will require greater investment in generation, storage and grid resilience.<\/p>\n The warning comes as Britain experiences its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to exceed 30C across large parts<\/a> of England and Wales.<\/p>\n
