{"id":80144,"date":"2026-07-09T22:51:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T22:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/80144\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T22:51:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T22:51:09","slug":"astrazeneca-employee-in-md-accused-of-insider-trading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/80144\/","title":{"rendered":"AstraZeneca employee in MD accused of insider trading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An employee of the pharmaceutical giant <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyrecord.com\/tag\/astrazeneca\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with AstraZeneca\" target=\"_blank\">AstraZeneca<\/a> is accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyrecord.com\/tag\/insider-trading\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with insider trading\" target=\"_blank\">insider trading<\/a> after allegedly buying stock in a company shortly before it was acquired by his employer.\n<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a complaint Wednesday in Maryland <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyrecord.com\/tag\/u-s-district-court\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with U.S. District Court\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. District Court<\/a> against Weiguo Zhai, 56, of <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyrecord.com\/tag\/potomac\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with potomac\" target=\"_blank\">Potomac<\/a>, who worked as a senior director for research and development at AstraZeneca from July 2020 until May 2024.\n<\/p>\n<p>Zhai worked at AstraZeneca\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyrecord.com\/tag\/gaithersburg\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with gaithersburg\" target=\"_blank\">Gaithersburg<\/a> office and was a member of the \u201cdue diligence team,\u201d evaluating the potential acquisition of Icosavax, a company focused on vaccine development, in November and December of 2023, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>He purchased 1,000 shares of Icosavax on November 27 of that year, the complaint states, at $11.04 per share and, about a week later, purchased another 1,000 for his wife\u2019s investment account at $10.54 per share.\n<\/p>\n<p>The $800 million acquisition was announced Dec. 12, and Icosavax\u2019s stock price rose by nearly 50%, to over $15 per share. Zhai allegedly sold his and his wife\u2019s shares on Dec. 12 and 13, realizing a \u201ctotal illicit gain\u201d of $10,006, the complaint states.\n<\/p>\n<p>Zhai is not yet listed as having a lawyer, court records show.
