Residents complain they are paying the price for the surging popularity of Wepre Park, Connah\u2019s Quay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It\u2019s now feared parking will spill out onto local streets, frustrating nearby residents. Critics have called for the park\u2019s 9am-9pm parking charges to be relaxed to accommodate regular users such as local families, joggers and dog walkers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Land hosting the park was bought from the Wepre Estate in 1943 by the former <a aria-label=\"Connah\u2019s QuayLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/all-about\/connahs-quay\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Connah\u2019s Quay<\/a> Urban District Council. Parking has been free ever since facilities were established at the 160-acre site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This week, payment machines were installed along with signs detailing the fees: \u00a31 for up to two hours; \u00a32.50 for up to four hours; and \u00a34 all day. Charging is due to start on Monday, July 27,<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The move was agreed by <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/all-about\/flintshire\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Flintshire<\/a> Council earlier this year. The local authority calculated it would bring in around \u00a328,000 in extra revenue per year \u2013 and this would be used to fix wear and tear on the car park caused by increased visitor numbers. <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/newsletter-preference-centre\/?view=Solus&amp;mailingListId=da31e0f9-0bf2-4091-bc59-f8c65b1f2341&amp;utm_source=solusarticle\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter<\/a> sent twice daily to your inbox<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council said a stakeholder group of regular users was \u201cbroadly supportive\u201d of the measure. However, now that charging has become a reality, online reaction has been hostile with people labelling the move \u201cshocking,\u201d \u201cdisgusting\u201d and &#8220;diabolical\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">One woman said: \u201cNearly 60 years I\u2019ve lived on Deeside. Never been a charge for parking there till now.\u201d Another local added: \u201cIt\u2019s just so wrong in so many ways. Boardwalks pass through ancient woodlands and a key attraction is Ewloe Castle, a 13th-century fortress that can be climbed. There\u2019s also a <a aria-label=\"visitor centre and cafeLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/whats-on\/reviews\/taste-test-caf-set-ancient-27338744\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">visitor centre and cafe<\/a>, skate park, play facilities and a much photographed waterfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In January, Tom Woodall, Flintshire\u2019s access and natural environment manager, said: \u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen since Covid is a massive increase in visitors and that is having an impact on the park in terms of our ability to maintain and keep orderly the public and their cars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThere is an expectation form the public that at our honeypot sites like Wepre Park, Loggerheads and Alyn Waters, that car parks are chargeable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Residents accept the park has changed in recent years. Online, a <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/all-about\/hawarden\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Hawarden<\/a> woman said: \u201cBefore Covid there would hardly be any cars in Wepre Park, now you\u2019re lucky to find a parking space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A man added: \u201cI hate the weekends there now. Anglers who pay to use a fish pond have complained parking charges will now exceed their annual \u00a340 fishing licences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">To reduce cost for regular users, <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/all-about\/flintshire-council\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Flintshire Council<\/a> is introducing a \u00a350 annual parking permit. And to counter street parking, the local authority has also amended local traffic management by installing double yellow lines. These apply to the B5125 and residential areas around all park entrances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While Wepre Park\u2019s parking charges are smaller than other honeypot sites in North Wales, especially on the coast, Connah\u2019s Quay residents fear they will be the thin edge of the wedge and fees will rise rapidly in subsequent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Locals have also complained the move is symbolic of moves by local authorities to charge more for all services despite rapidly rising council tax bills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Online, a woman said: \u201cThe endless charging to use public areas \u2013 such a joy! At least the air we breathe is free, for now at least&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Another added: \u201cThe car park is a form of accessibility for many people to visit nature. Wepre has always been a saving grace for me, I have a chronic health condition and need to drive there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What the council said<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Katie Wilby, Chief Officer for Streetscene and Transportation, said: \u201cThe introduction of car parking charges in Wepre Park was part of a wider review of the car parking policy that was agreed by the council\u2019s Cabinet in January 2025 followed by statutory consultation, which concluded in November 2025.
