{"id":80900,"date":"2026-07-10T23:32:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T23:32:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/80900\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T23:32:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T23:32:24","slug":"barbados-leader-criticizes-suggestion-that-former-colonies-owe-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/80900\/","title":{"rendered":"Barbados leader criticizes suggestion that former colonies owe Britain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/barbados\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barbados<\/a> Prime Minister Mia Mottley has described as \u201casinine\u201d a suggestion by a U.K. lawmaker that Britain\u2019s former colonies should repay it for its historic investment in them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot believe we are being asked to respond to the suggestion that the descendants of the enslaved should pay for the machinery that oppressed them,\u201d Mottley wrote on X late Thursday. \u201cThe Caribbean does not owe Britain for slavery, for colonial extraction, or for laws that treated African people as chattel. We are not asking for charity. We are asking for justice, and history itself has already told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was speaking after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/suella-braverman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Suella Braverman<\/a> \u2014 a former British Home Secretary who is now a member of the anti-immigration <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigel-farage-reform-uk-donald-trump-dc542381b77903eca33771c22bb841b0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reform UK<\/a> party \u2014 wrote in a post on X on July 3 that the British Empire \u201cdid so much good for the world.\u201d Braverman was writing in response to another parliamentarian who noted that Jamaica planned to lodge a formal petition for reparations later this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the government is seriously thinking about this then former colonies should pay the British back for the considerable investment, effort and contribution that this country made which laid the foundations for many flourishing democracies today,\u201d Braverman wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Mottley\u2019s comments came after Caribbean leaders who are members of the regional trade bloc Caricom met this week in St. Lucia to discuss issues including <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/slaves-owners-justice-reparations-britain-caribbean-7e38ec2efbbb3ee57a8891daa417ca2f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slavery reparations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mottley said she doesn\u2019t doubt there are some British parliamentarians who want to distract people from the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/andy-burnham-labour-leadership-election-nominations-a692fe3d071a57024c474f799721f1f1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">domestic politics of the United Kingdom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who wish to speak on this matter should first take the time to read enough history to understand it,\u201d she wrote on X. \u201cThe Caribbean will not be used as a prop for anyone\u2019s politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Mottley led a subcommittee of Caribbean leaders that launched a new slavery <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ghana-reparations-slave-trade-be189f0063d2f40398b9191fa5e662d4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reparations manifesto<\/a> during a reparations conference in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>Under Mottley, Barbados <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/queen-elizabeth-ii-barbados-rihanna-b1633f7f26427c0cb62ebe8f32b77fa1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut ties with Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> in November 2021 and ceased to be a constitutional monarchy.
