The guidance arrives as the nation experiences its third heatwave of the year.

This week, temperatures across parts of the UK have climbed into the mid-30s as the scorching weather continues. According to the Met Office, Friday is expected to be the peak of the current heatwave.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued amber and yellow heat health alerts. The elevated temperatures are predicted to place significant strain on health and social care services, reports the Express.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree stated: “Many people will understandably want to know how long the current heatwave is likely to last. While temperatures are expected to ease across southeast England through the weekend and into next week, it won’t be a straightforward end to the warm weather.

“The overall signal is for continued fine, dry and very warm weather at times for many parts of the UK into next week. There is, however, a chance of thunderstorms spreading into parts of the south and southwest.”

Nick and Polly saw the temperature drop after the experiment(Image: BBC)

The blistering daytime heat means numerous people are finding it challenging to remain cool indoors, as British homes are generally designed to retain warmth during winter months. Overnight conditions stay close and sticky, leaving millions struggling to get a decent night’s sleep.

However, numerous online cooling methods claim to lower indoor temperatures. Well-known television presenter Nick Knowles spoke with Polly Turton from Shade The UK, a charity supporting vulnerable individuals during periods of extreme heat, to determine whether these techniques genuinely work.

They conducted several trials, including positioning frozen water bottles before a fan for an hour to assess whether it influenced the air temperature. They also applied tin foil to all windows in an attempt to reduce indoor temperatures.

Content cannot be displayed without consent

Describing the water bottle technique, Polly explained: “We are going to show that by moving air across a cold object, you can cool the room temperature.” Checking a thermometer, Nick noted: “Okay, so the room at the moment reads at 27.1C.”

They set the fan to “maximum” and departed the room for an hour to observe the results of the trial. When they returned, they examined the thermometer once more. Nick said: “It is noticeably cooler in here… [the thermometer] now says 25.4C.”

Nick enquired whether the two-degree reduction would prove significant. She responded: “It may not seem it, but for a young child in a hot bedroom, or an elderly adult suffering from heat, that’s going to make a big difference to their health and wellbeing.” She continued: “The electricity used to run this is minimal, compared to an air conditioning unit”.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that running air conditioning for 24 hours can cost you up to £6. In contrast, operating a free-standing fan for the same duration generally costs somewhere between 15p and 31p.

Regarding the tin foil technique, which aims to deflect sunlight and prevent heat buildup, they found it produced noticeable results when they checked the room an hour later. Poilly explained: “[The thermometer] was reading at about 32C on the glass pane. Now the surface temperature is about 28C – about a two to three-degree reduction”.

Nick commented: “It definitely works”. Polly responded: “It is an effective solution if you don’t have any other options available to you.”

Nick further informed viewers that the tin foil approach is another “cost-effective” option, as a roll of tin foil usually costs approximately £1.50.

The UK is sweltering in mid-30°C heatwave temperatures as BBC Morning Live shares a simple heatwave cooling hack…

[4
146,96,34709,35952,6048,5,6,150
post-81269","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-uk","tag-bbc","tag-health","tag-life-hacks","tag-morning-live","tag-property-news","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-weather
["GET
