{"id":82026,"date":"2026-07-13T11:58:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T11:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/82026\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T11:58:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T11:58:41","slug":"uk-banking-giant-barclays-eyeing-up-inverness-high-street-site-after-building-warrant-for-vacant-shop-lodged-with-highland-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/82026\/","title":{"rendered":"UK banking giant Barclays eyeing up Inverness High Street site, after building warrant for vacant shop lodged with Highland Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 8192 5612\" alt=\"Barclays has lodged a warrant for a &#xA3;656,000 refit of a vacant shop at 50-52 High Street, Inverness.\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"TW57D56QOT1QR5H5MWHG.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.46\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/TW57D56QOT1QR5H5MWHG.jpg\" alt=\"Barclays has lodged a warrant for a &#xA3;656,000 refit of a vacant shop at 50-52 High Street, Inverness.\"\/>Barclays has lodged a warrant for a \u00a3656,000 refit of a vacant shop at 50-52 High Street, Inverness.<\/p>\n<p>Major UK banking giant Barclays could be moving into Inverness High Street after plans for a \u00a3650,000 refit of an empty shop were lodged with Highland Council.<\/p>\n<p>The well-known bank currently operates a small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strathspey-herald.co.uk\/news\/banking-giant-s-eastgate-shopping-centre-move-gets-green-lig-432935\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barclays Local pod within Inverness&#8217;s Eastgate Shopping Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to that opening, earlier this year, the bank had been on the lookout for a more permanent base for its staff and facility &#8211; having been suddenly left without a bricks-and-mortar site when its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverness-courier.co.uk\/news\/banking-giant-actively-seeking-new-location-in-wake-of-spe-390568\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous home inside the Spectrum Centre was forced to shutter its doors<\/a> last August after the Farraline Park building suddenly ceased operating.<\/p>\n<p>And it seems that its search for a new home did not end with the subsequent opening of its Eastgate pod, for now a newly-submitted building warrant appears to have revealed that Barclays will be moving into <a href=\"https:\/\/g-s.co.uk\/properties\/property\/51469\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50-52 High Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The warrant, <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.highland.gov.uk\/wam\/scottishBuildingWarrantDetails.do?activeTab=details&amp;keyVal=THRAZ6IHLBR00\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which lists Barclays as the applicant<\/a>, is proposing \u00a3656,000 worth of &#8220;internal and external refurbishment works to an existing commercial retail unit, including minor layout alterations, replacement finishes, upgrade to shopfront elements, and installation of new mechanical and electrical services&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>No further details regarding Barclays&#8217; plans for the unit were provided in the document.<\/p>\n<p>Given the prominent location, and size of the vacant shop, it is also unclear if Barclays&#8217; plans are for a simple like-for-like replacement of its previous Barclays Local, or whether it will boast additional facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The bank had previously run a full branch in the city&#8217;s Union Street, but closed it two years ago and downgraded its facility to a non-cash handling Local within the Spectrum Centre before its sudden unexpected closure last summer.<\/p>\n<p>A Barclays Local offers much of the same banking facilities as a full branch &#8211; such as in-person financial support and advice on subjects like digital banking &#8211; but does not handle money.<\/p>\n<p>Barclays has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Public Notice Portal<\/a> to find out more about planning applications that affect you.<\/p>\n<p>    Do you want to respond to this article?
