<\/p>\nThe old Barclays Bank is the latest former banking building to get snapped up following closure<\/p>\n

An old Grimsby bank is set for an exciting future after selling at auction for a six-figure sum. The former Barclays Bank<\/a> building, which is a Grade II Listed, has finally gone under the hammer two years after it closed its doors to customers.<\/p>\n It is not known what the new owners have planned for the building, based at 35 to 39 Victoria Street<\/a> in the town centre, but a company from the North East is now looking at driving forward its transformation.<\/p>\n The bank was auctioned following a marketing campaign<\/a> by agents at Sanderson Weatherall, highlighting opportunities for its redevelopment. The large corner building has offices alongside its old banking hall and lots of meeting rooms.<\/p>\n It eventually sold \u2013 after garnering a lot of interest \u2013 for \u00a3275,000. Sanderson & Weatherall say its position close to the one of the entrances to Freshney Place<\/a> Shopping Centre highlight how it could play a part in the recent regeneration in Grimsby, which has included the new NHS Community Diagnostics Centre and Horizon Youth Zone<\/a>.<\/p>\n Inside Barclays Bank in Grimsby(Image: Sanderson Weatherall)<\/p>\n The Grimsby Barclays branch officially closed in March 2024, with the banking giant citing a decline in footfall. At the time, Barclays said that fewer than ten regular customers were using the branch exclusively for their banking. A Barclays Local has since opened in the town centre at the Town Hall.<\/p>\n As more and more banks close around the region, developers have been moving in with fresh ideas for former banking halls. In January, the one-time Royal Bank of Scotland in Grimsby reopened to the public after being transformed into a beautiful \u2018public living room\u2019.<\/p>\n The bank closed more than seven years ago and the property has lain empty ever since, but the building was snapped up by CARE \u2013 Christian Action & Resource Enterprise – in 2023, paving the way for the creation of a community hub.<\/a> The charity, which has been working in Grimsby for over 30 years supporting families and individuals in crisis, turned it into the CARE Hub \u2013 a space where anyone can walk in, sit down, and have a free cup of tea, no questions asked.<\/p>\n In 2023 Racks, on Osborne Street \u2013 built in the home of the former Co-operative bank \u2013 transformed the old vault<\/a> into a private function room. Meanwhile in Cleethorpes, The Counting House opened in former HSBC more than five years ago serving food and drinks.<\/p>\n And Cleethorpes’ former Barclays Bank reopened in 2025 as Antalya Grill House, a Mediterranean restaurant and takeway, four years after it had been sold to new owners. A spokesman for Sanderson Weatherall who was involved in the marketing of the old Barclays Bank said regeneration plans elsewhere in Grimsby were proving to be an invaluable draw.<\/p>\n He added: \u201cThe buyer is from the North East.
