{"id":84418,"date":"2026-07-16T18:47:37","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T18:47:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/84418\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T18:47:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T18:47:37","slug":"barclays-further-tightens-wfh-rules-for-thousands-of-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/84418\/","title":{"rendered":"Barclays further tightens WFH rules for thousands of staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barclays has further tightened the screw on working-from-home arrangements for its global employees, after the lender told all of its senior staff to come into the office four days a week.<\/p>\n<p>The bank is set to mandate employees into the office three days per week from October, up from a current two-day policy, according to a memo sent to staff last week.<\/p>\n<p>Barclays\u2019 employees globally received the memo with information specific to their country offices.<\/p>\n<p>The changes are expected to affect around half of the bank\u2019s 45,000 staff in the UK, including those in operations and technology functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of our colleagues who are not already working in the office three days will align with our broader approach across the bank,\u201d a spokesperson for Barclays told The Banker.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the bank\u2019s client-facing employees, such as its investment bankers, have already been attending the office five days a week.<\/p>\n<p>The change comes after the UK-headquartered bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanker.com\/content\/b48f106b-1408-4f63-bcc0-bc5446605871\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ordered its managing directors to work from the office an extra day per week<\/a>, bringing mandated days for senior-level staff up to four days a week, as exclusively reported by The Banker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur most senior leaders will spend an additional day in the office to support collaboration, decision-making and leadership visibility,\u201d Barclays said.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanker.com\/content\/07f6a630-31b3-420c-97d4-401aabcc6982\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remote and hybrid investment banking jobs<\/a> in particular being advertised in the US and the UK has fallen.<\/p>\n<p>Barclays\u2019 increased return-to-office mandate is in line with moves by other European peers, including HSBC and Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, which are significantly increasing mandated office attendance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebanker.com\/content\/b2600131-d391-4355-8ec4-3d27bd0d703d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Santander told TSB employees last month<\/a> that they must return to the office on a stricter basis from next year to bring the bank in line with the Spanish lender\u2019s stricter working policy.<\/p>\n<p>JPMorgan, the largest bank in the US, told all employees to be in the office five days a week in March last year, while Goldman Sachs did the same more than 18 months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Barclays sent a memo to some of its employees stating that they would now need to come into the office three days a week instead of two; however, not all staff were brought within the three-day remit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognise the benefits of balancing flexibility for colleagues with the importance of working together in our physical locations.
