Speaking during a keynote address at the<a href=\"https:\/\/airspacepower.com\/conference\/the-chief-of-the-air-staffs-global-air-space-chiefs-conference-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Global Air and Space Chiefs Conference,<\/a> Pollard characterized the loyal wingmen\u2019s role as both a \u201cguardian angel\u201d and an \u201cattack dog\u201d for British tactical aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Along with a planned futuristic fighter, Storm Fighter will \u201cmake the Royal Air Force (RAF)<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2026\/07\/storm-fighter-uk-christens-drone-wingman-program-unveils-new-designs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Europe\u2019s first six-generation air force<\/a>,\u201d Pollard said, adding that CCA development would \u201clay the ground for exports, growth, partnership with friendly nations, more defense jobs, and a more resilient defense industrial base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s $6.6 Billion Drone Initiative<\/p>\n<p>Late last month, former U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer set out his government\u2019s long-awaited<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-drone-transformation-to-strengthen-armed-forces-backed-by-more-than-5-billion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Defense Investment Plan (DIP).<\/a> The aim of this is nothing less than \u201ckeeping the country safe for years to come,\u201d the government said, as the plan for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2025\/12\/forget-the-f-22-f-35-f-47-or-fcas-6th-generation-tempest-gcap-fighter-is-coming\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK Armed Forces<\/a> leans heavily on autonomous systems.<\/p>\n<p>The Defense Investment Plan is part of a 10-year blueprint for national security that increases defense spending to 3 percent of GDP, with the goal of reaching 3.5 percent by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>In the next four years, the plan will invest $6.6 billion in drones and related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2025\/02\/the-uk-is-recycling-old-fighter-jets-to-build-its-6th-generation-tempest-fighter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">capabilities<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrones are rapidly reshaping warfare, with cheap systems destroying high-value targets and innovation cycles measured in weeks, not years,\u201d the government said in the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUkraine uses roughly 200,000 drones a month to defend itself from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2026\/07\/rusty-dagger-the-u-s-air-force-built-a-cheap-cruise-missile-in-months-instead-of-years-it-did-it-for-ukraine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russia\u2019s barbaric invasion<\/a>, while at the height of the Iran conflict, 700 offensive drones were being launched per day,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuture Combat Will Be Swarming With Drones\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are maximizing our air power in the eye of the storm of future combat, which will be swarming with drones, sixth-generation fighter jets and ever-evolving EW (electronic warfare) capabilities,\u201d Pollard said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52821\" class=\"wp-image-52821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Tempest-1-e1663782766236.jpg\" alt=\"Tempest Artist Rendition. Image Credit: BAE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to reveal that our new autonomous CCA program will be named Storm Fighter \u2026 to deliver guardian angel and attack dog drones to fly into combat with the Typhoon, F-35, and Tempest. Storm Fighter will make the RAF Europe\u2019s first sixth-generation air force,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The drones will extend the sensor reach and<a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/defense\/aircraft-propulsion\/royal-air-forces-cca-program-will-be-attack-dog-crewed-fighters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> carry additional weapons<\/a> for crewed fighters, increasing overall combat mass and survivability.<\/p>\n<p>The RAF Gets A Huge Funding Boost In the DIP<\/p>\n<p>The RAF is getting a huge boost in funding from the Defense Investment Plan (DIP), published late last month, Pollard said, with $41.7 billion earmarked for air and space programs, with money for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2026\/03\/f-35-is-old-news-a-gcap-6th-generation-stealth-fighter-alliance-is-forming\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GCAP development<\/a>, upgrades for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurofighter.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Eurofighter Typhoon<\/a>, and additional<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsf.mil\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> F-35 Joint Strike Fighters<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Replacing combat aircraft entirely with uncrewed systems is \u201cnot the right lesson\u201d from Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine, Pollard adds, noting that the UK needs a \u201ctype of air power that only combat jets and deep strike can deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Storm Fighter will \u201cdevelop autonomous jets here in the UK, providing new levels of lethality and survivability for our crewed jets\u201d and helping to maximize UK air power, Pollard said at the summit.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s \u201cStorm\u201d Programs Of The RAF<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Storm Fighter drone program, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth separately unveiled two new supporting uncrewed designs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These include Storm Chrome, a dedicated electronic warfare jamming platform, and Storm Fire, a one-way attack drone with a 1,000-mile range.<\/p>\n<p>Smyth told the conference that the service is targeting an operational CCA capability<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sofx.com\/raf-names-cca-program-storm-fighter-unveils-jamming-and-strike-drone-variants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> before the end of the decade<\/a>, Aviation Week reported.<\/p>\n<p>The new systems build on operational experience gained through Storm Shroud, an autonomous platform that entered RAF service last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the RAF,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/news\/articles\/stormshroud-arrival-marks-the-future-of-uk-air-combat-power\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Storm Shroud<\/a> is a groundbreaking autonomous electronic warfare drone designed to fly ahead of crewed combat aircraft, such as the F-35B Lightning and Eurofighter Typhoon.
