BAE Systems<\/a>, Boeing<\/a> and Saab<\/a> have formalised a partnership centred on the Royal Air Force\u2019s next generation fast-jet trainer programme, by signing a teaming agreement that includes plans to establish a UK final assembly and integration facility.<\/p>\n

Announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, the agreement follows a letter of intent signed by the three companies last year around Boeing\u2019s T-7 pilot training aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The companies say the programme would support hundreds of jobs in the UK while creating a domestic base capable of assembling and integrating the aircraft.<\/p>\n

UK assembly plan at heart of RAF proposal<\/p>\n

The proposed facility would undertake final assembly and systems integration in the UK, with the partners also seeking to establish a domestic supply chain across manufacturing, maintenance and aircraft support.<\/p>\n

The companies argue that such an approach would give Britain greater control over its future pilot training capability.<\/p>\n

They also say it aligns with the government\u2019s wider Defence Investment Plan by keeping key skills, intellectual property and support activities within the UK.<\/p>\n

Work is already under way to identify a suitable location for the assembly site and develop the associated supplier network.<\/p>\n

RAF faces ticking clock on Hawk retirement<\/p>\n

The latest agreement represents the next stage in a collaboration first announced in November 2025<\/a>, when BAE Systems, Boeing and Saab revealed plans to jointly pursue future RAF training opportunities.<\/p>\n

That follows the UK\u2019s 2025 Strategic Defence Review, which confirmed that the RAF needs a new Advanced Jet Trainer to succeed the Hawk T2 fleet, which has suffered\u00a0persistent availability issues<\/a>\u00a0and is due to retire in the next decade.<\/p>\n

The older Hawk T1s, now\u00a0largely flown by the Red Arrows<\/a>, are expected to leave service around 2030.<\/p>\n

T-7 combines aircraft and simulation training\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rather than offering only a training aircraft, the consortium is promoting an integrated training system centred on the Boeing T-7, combining live flying with advanced simulation technologies.<\/p>\n

The companies say the system has been developed to support training for current RAF platforms, including the Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin F-35.<\/p>\n

US Air Force programme gathers momentum<\/p>\n

The UK campaign comes as the T-7 programme reaches another milestone in the United States.<\/p>\n

The T-7A Red Hawk was selected by the US Air Force in 2018 as its next advanced trainer and is\u00a0edging closer to operational delivery.<\/a><\/p>\n

The aircraft is continuing flight testing for the US Air Force and recently entered a new phase of the acquisition process after receiving Milestone C approval in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n
