{"id":88823,"date":"2026-07-23T11:26:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T11:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/88823\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T11:26:32","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T11:26:32","slug":"former-barclays-boss-jes-staley-to-face-us-house-panel-on-epstein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/88823\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Barclays boss Jes Staley to face US House panel on Epstein"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">By Nupur Anand  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">NEW YORK, July 23 (Reuters) &#8211; Former Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley will testify on Thursday in a closed-door U.S. congressional hearing over his ties \u200cto Jeffrey Epstein, as lawmakers probe the late convicted sex offender&#8217;s ties with \u200cpolitical and business elites.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Staley will appear before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform as part of its \u200binvestigation into Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Staley became CEO of top British lender Barclays in 2015 and resigned in 2021 after a dispute with the British financial regulator over how he described his ties to Epstein. In June 2025, Staley lost his appeal against a Financial \u200cConduct Authority industry ban for misleading \u2060the British regulator about those ties.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">In that case, the FCA cited a cache of over 1,000 emails between Staley and Epstein, in which \u2060Staley described their friendship as &#8220;profound&#8221; and referred to Epstein as &#8220;family.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Staley said he had no recollection of those emails. He has maintained he had a close professional relationship with Epstein, but was unaware of \u200bhis crimes.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Staley \u200bis also facing a lawsuit in Los Angeles \u200bthat claims he and Barclays defrauded \u200cshareholders about his relationship with Epstein. The defendants have sought dismissal of the claims.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Staley&#8217;s lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Before joining Barclays, Staley was head of the private bank at JPMorgan Chase, where Epstein was one of his clients.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The U.S. Virgin Islands sued JPMorgan for allegedly ignoring Epstein&#8217;s sex trafficking. JPMorgan denied liability and later settled \u200cthe lawsuit without admitting wrongdoing. The bank in turn \u200bsued Staley, before reaching a confidential settlement with him.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Epstein, \u200bwho died in a New York \u200bCity prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, \u200chad extensive ties to many prominent people \u200bin politics, finance, academia \u200band business, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
